HAMILTON, N. Y. (12/10/11) – The Colgate women's basketball team earned its first win of the season defeating Wagner 71-59 on Saturday evening at Cotterell Court. The Raiders were led by freshman
Kelly Reid who scored a career-high 13 points, while grabbing three rebounds.
Colgate (1-10) had five players in double-figures, led by Reid and
Lauryn Kobiela who both scored 13 points, while
Kelly Korkowski pitched in 12 points and five rebounds. Freshman
Mariah Jones and senior
Candice Green both scored 11 in the win.
In her first career start
Catherine Lewis opened the game with a lay-up to put the Raiders on the board first as Colgate jumped out to an 18-7 lead. Wagner cut the lead to four taking advantage of a 9-6 run, but still trailed 20-16 with 8:53 left in the half. The Raiders weren't fazed by the run, and responded with a 13-5 run to end the half and head into the locker room leading 33-21.
Wagner (2-7) came out in the second half with a 15-5 run to make the score 38-36 with 15:10 remaining. The Seahawks then continued to dominate as they took the lead for the first time with 11:23 remaining after a lay-up by Chanez Robinson. But Green quickly gave the Raiders the lead once again with a jumper as Colgate regained control and held a 59-49 lead with 3:32 remaining. The Seahawks cut the lead to 61-55, but Colgate remained calm and made eight-straight free throws down the stretch to secure it first win 71-59.
Colgate shot 45 percent from the field, while holding Wagner to 35 percent. The Raiders were out-rebounded 43-28, but forced 23 turnovers.
The Raiders will take a break for final exams and resume play on Sunday, Dec. 18 against NJIT. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
