HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/26/11) – The Colgate women's basketball team dropped its fifth Patriot League game of the season on Wednesday night when it fell to Holy Cross 62-51.
Senior
Tayler Wejnert led the Raiders with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds while junior
Tricia Oakes also had 11 points and four rebounds.
Holy Cross got off to a strong start with a 6-0 run in the first few minutes until Oakes ended it with Colgate's (6-14, 1-5 PL) first two points at the 15:25 mark. With their first points on the board, the Raiders soon picked up their pace, playing some aggressive defense and making some smart plays to tie the game at 6-6 just 20 seconds later. The team soon took the lead with a fast break off a rebound in its next play, and then held the lead over the next five minutes until the Crusaders tied the score with a pair of free throws to make it 14-14 at the 10:29 mark. Still carrying their scoring momentum, Holy Cross then reclaimed its early lead with an 8-0 run and by the six-minute mark, held a 22-14 advantage. Colgate then attempted to make a comeback with a final run in the last minutes of the half, but by half time, Holy Cross maintained a 33-25 advantage.
The second half started with both teams struggling to find their first basket. Holy Cross eventually got on the board first but it was the Raiders that were able to find their rhythm, going on a 9-2 run to put the score at 35-34 at the 14:34 mark. The teams continued to trade baskets over the next five minutes, with the scoring margin coming as close as one point on three occasions, but as clock hit the eight-minute mark, the Crusaders had extended their lead to nine points. Colgate continued to play hard, attempting to keep the game close, but in the end it was Holy Cross that was able to secure the win, 62-51.
"We were right there in the second half," stated head coach
Pamela Bass. "We need to handle critical possessions better. When we do, great things will happen."
Colgate had a 33.9 field goal percentage, shot 50 percent from the line and was 3-18 from beyond the arch.
The Raiders will resume play on the road this weekend when they travel to Annapolis, Md. for a matchup against Navy on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m.
