Sami Kozlowski recorded a game-high 18 points and two steals while sophomore
Jhazmine Lynch had 12 points and a team-high four assists for the Raiders. Junior
Tricia Oakes led the team in rebounds with seven.
The Eagles opened the game with a 5-0 run until Lynch sunk a pair of free throws to put the score at 5-2. American soon improved on its early lead, going on another run that extended the scoring margin to 16 at the 12:52 mark with a 20-4 score. Not discourage, Colgate continued to play hard, and was soon rewarded with a 20-10 run over the next ten minutes, but by half time the Eagles maintained their advantage with a 34-26 lead.
In the second half it was the Raiders that got on the board first with a three-pointer from Kozlowski to reduce the scoring margin to just five points. The teams continued to exchange baskets but by the 12:19 mark, American was able to extend its lead once again to put the score at 51-36. Determined to make a comeback like they didin the first half, Colgate picked up its pace and soon found itself within reach of the Eagles. However, as the game came to a close, American proved to be the stronger team, keeping the Raiders at arms length and securing its third conference win of the season.
“I thought we had a strong second half,” stated head coach
Pamela Bass. “We improved our rebounding and had some very strong defensive stops, but we just couldn't get over the top and take the lead. The next step is to string a run together offensively.”
Colgate had 33 rebounds in the game, which was equal to the Eagles. The team had a 38.6 field goal percentage and was 9-of-13 from the charity stripe.
The Raiders will resume play on Wednesday, Jan. 19 when they travel to Lehigh for their fourth conference game of the season. The game is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa.
