HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/12/11)
– The Colgate women's basketball team secured its first Patriot League win on Wednesday night when it defeated Lafayette 64-60 on Cotterell Court. The Raiders now have a 1-1 league record.

Junior Tricia Oakes led the team in scoring with 15 points while senior Krista Moser had 13 points and eight rebounds. Senior Kelly Korkowski led the team in rebounds with a game-high 11 rebounds.

Colgate (6-10, 1-1 PL) came out to an attacking start with a three-pointer from senior Tayler Wejnert to give the Raiders the 3-0 lead. The team then continued its lead for the first five minutes of the game until the 15:02 mark when Lafayette took the 7-6 advantage. The teams continued to trade baskets with the Leopards maintaining their advantage, but a strong comeback from Colgate midway through the half helped the team reclaim its early lead and put the score at 21-12 with just six minutes left in the half. As the first 20 minutes of play came to an end, Lafayette attempted to make a comeback but by half time the Raiders held a 36-25 lead.

In the second half it was Lafayette that started off strong with a 4-0 run to put the score at 36-31. Colgate continued to play hard but the Leopards were not deterred, making some critical baskets and eventually reducing the scoring margin to one point at the 14:41 mark. Feeling the pressure, the Raiders soon found their momentum again, going on a 21-10 run to put the score at 61-49 with just five minutes left in the game. Desperate for their first league win, the Lafayette attempted one last surge to win the game, but Colgate proved to be too strong, holding its lead to secure its first conference win of the season 64-60.

“I am really happy for the team,” stated head coach Pamela Bass. “The key stat line going into the game was who was going to win the battle of the boards. We executed our game plan well. Our defensive ball pressure and our effort on the boards allowed us to get out and run.”

The Raiders held a slight 40-39 advantage in rebounds. The team had 31.6 field goal percentage and was 20-27 from the charity stripe.

Colgate will resume play this weekend when it travels to Washington, D.C. for a matchup against league opponent, American, on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m.
