HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/1/10) – The Colgate women's basketball team secured its third win of the season when it defeated Cornell 65-52 on Wednesday night. Senior guard Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) led the Raiders with 12 points and five rebounds while classmate Tayler Wejnert (Ramsey, N.J.) and sophomore Jhazmine Lynch (San Diego, Calif.) contributed 11 and 10 points respectively.

Wejnert also had a team-high six rebounds while Lynch set a new career best with a game-high eight assists.

The first half started off slow with both teams struggling to sink a basket until Colgate (3-5) eventually opened scoring just over two minutes into the game to give the Raiders a 5-0 lead. Cornell soon found its stride as the game progressed, reducing the scoring margin and eventually taking the lead midway through the half. The score remained close as both teams continued to exchange baskets, but by half time it was the Raiders that held the 27-25 advantage.

Colgate then came out to an explosive start in the second half, outhustling the Big Red and forcing its opponent to make one turnover after another as the team extended its lead with another 5-0 run. Cornell soon picked up its level of play once again and made a comeback, narrowing the scoring margin to just one point at the 11.11 mark. However, with the taste of a one-point loss still lingering from the their last game, the Raiders knew they had to dig deep in order to secure the win. With just seven minutes of play left, Colgate came alive once again, pushing past Cornell as they went on a 16-0 run to extend their lead and eventually secure a 65-52 win.

The Raiders had a 43.9 field goal percentage, going 11-of-24 in the first half and 14-of-33 in the second. The team was also 6-of-15 from beyond the arch.

“I thought it was a great team effort,” stated head coach Pam Bass. “It is always nice to win a matchup against Cornell and I was very proud of the energy and focus that the team showed in the second half.

Colgate will resume play at home this weekend when it hosts Loyola-Chicago on Friday at 7 p.m. followed by St. Francis (N.Y.) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
