Women's Basketball Weekly Release #7: Raiders Open Patriot League Schedule

Saturday, January 9 – at Army, 6 p.m.

The Raiders return to Cotterell Court Tuesday evening to host their final non-conference game of the season before opening their Patriot League schedule on the road this Saturday. Colgate will face Howard at 7 p.m. on Jan. 5. The Raiders will then travel to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army on Jan. 9. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
 
Scouting the Bison
Howard will face Colgate holding a 4-7 record overall and 1-0 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference after defeating the Patriot League's Holy Cross, 87-80, in overtime on Dec. 30 at the Hawk Holiday Classic. The Bison's other three wins have come against Jacksonville, Radford and league opponent Hampton. Junior Zykia Brown sits atop the score-sheet for Howard, averaging 17.8 points and 2.1 assists per game. Rookie Saadia Doyle is the top rebounder and second in scoring for the Bison averaging 10.8 boards and 16.0 points per game.  Head coach Niki Reid Geckeler is in her second season at the helm of the Howard women's basketball program. Last season she led the squad in more than doubling its win total from the previous year.
 
Scouting the Black Knights
Army will host the Raiders for their first Patriot League game of the 2009-10 season with a 6-7 overall record. The two teams have faced two common opponents so far this season, in St. Francis (N.Y.) and Wagner. The Black Knights defeated both teams downing St. Francis, 68-56, and the Seahawks, 74-70, in overtime. Erin Anthony leads Army with an average of 16.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. Nalini Hawkins adds an average of 10.8 points and 4.8 boards per game while Jessie Coiffard leads the team in assists with 2.8 and adds 7.8 points per game. Head coach Dave Magarity is in his fourth season as the Army women's basketball coach.  Magarity led the Black Knights to a 19-12 overall finish last season and a 9-4 mark in the Patriot League.
 
Last Time Out
The Colgate women's basketball team wrapped up their holiday trip on Saturday, Jan. 2, falling to Ohio, 74-40 at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio.  The Raiders are now 5-8 overall while the Bobcats improved to 4-9. Junior Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) led the Raiders and was second overall in scoring with 13 points. Sophomore Tricia Oakes (Evergreen, Colo.) added eight points while rookie Lulu Brase (Lake Wylie, S.C.) had a team high four rebounds for Colgate.
 
Series vs. Howard/Army
 
Howard – The two teams are split in the all-time series 1-1 with Colgate winning last year's meeting, 57-41, in Washington D.C. Howard's last victory in the series came back during the 1995-96 season. Tayler Wejnert (Ramsey, N.J.) led the Raiders in scoring last year with 13 points while Sami Kozlowski  added 11 points. Candice Green (East Brunswick, N.J) was the top rebounder for Colgate with five boards and had six assists.
 
Army –  The Raiders will take on the Black Knights for the 46th time in the series. Army currently holds a series lead of 27-18 and has won seven of the last eight meetings, including both games last season. The two teams last met on Feb. 7, 2009, with Colgate falling 59-39 at Christl Arena. Sami Kozlowski led the Raiders with 15 points and three assists with Tayler Wejnert adding 12 points and four rebounds.
 
Leading the Way
Junior Sami Kozlowski is currently leading the Raiders in scoring with an average of 11.7 points and 2.4 assists per game, while sophomore Tricia Oakes is averaging 10.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Rookie Jhazmine Lynch (San Diego, Calif.) is third in scoring and leads the freshmen class with 8.8 points and 1.7 steals per game. Junior Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) leads the squad in rebounding averaging 6.3 per game along with 6.4 points. 
 
Weekly Honors
Colgate freshman Jhazmine Lynch was named the Patriot League Anaconda Rookie of the Week for the week ending Dec. 6. This marks the second time this season that Lynch has been honored with the award. The rookie guard had 21 points, five rebounds, and seven assists last week. Lynch scored 12 points and had four assists against Bryant last Tuesday. On Thursday, she picked up nine points, two steals and three assists. The Rookie of the Week award has gone to a Colgate student-athlete 10 times since the start of last season.
 
Top Returners
The Raiders return 10 players to this year's squad, including four starters from the 2008-09 season. Junior Tayler Wejnert returns to the Colgate squad after appearing in 20 games last season. Wejnert led the team in scoring averaging 11.7 points per game, followed by fellow junior Sami Kozlowski who averaged 9.7 points and led the team in steals with 33 in 30 starts with the Raiders. Tricia Oakes led Colgate on the boards as a freshman, pulling down 6.0 rebounds in 22 games. Sophomore Candice Green also started in all 30 games for the Raiders last season averaging 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds.
 
Preseason Picks
The Colgate women's basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the 2010 Patriot League preseason coaches and sports information directors poll. Defending champion Lehigh was selected to repeat this year, with 97 total points and 13-first place votes.  Following the Mountain Hawks in order are American (76, 3 first-place), Holy Cross (76), Navy (54), Bucknell (52), Army (50), Colgate (22) and Lafayette (21). Lehigh's Erica Prosser was chosen as the Preseason Player of the Year. 
 
Rookie Trio
Colgate welcomes three freshmen to this year's squad, center Lulu Brase of Lake Wylie, S.C., guard Jhazmine Lynch of San Diego, Calif., and guard Rebekah Ward of Montreal, Que.
