Football Weekly Release #5: Homecoming in Hamilton

THIS WEEK
Sat., Oct. 3 – vs. Cornell (Hamilton, N.Y.), 1:00 p.m.

The No. 25 Colgate Raiders (4-0, 1-0) play host to the Cornell Big Red (2-0) for homecoming at Andy Kerr Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3.
   
THE SERIES
This is the 92nd meeting between Colgate and Cornell (17th most-played in Division I history), with the Big Red leading 48-40-3. Colgate won last season 38-22 in Ithaca.

THE COACHES
Colgate head coach Dick Biddle, who is the winningest football coach in school history, is in his 14th season at the helm of the Raiders.  His overall record is 108-49 and is 10-2 against Cornell.
Cornell head coach Jim Knowles is in his sixth campaign with the Big Red. He has compiled a mark of 26-26 at Cornell. 

LAST OUTING
Senior wide receiver Pat Simonds caught 9 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown as Colgate held off Fordham 20-12 in the Patriot League opener for both teams. Simonds' receptions and yardage totals are both season-highs.
Junior quarterback Greg Sullivan and sophomore running back Jordan McCord starred for Colgate offensively as well. Sullivan threw two touchdown passes and ran for another while accumulating 298 total yards on the night. McCord rushed 41 times for 192 yards, following up his 44 carry, 212-yard effort from last week.
The Colgate defensive effort was once again stellar. The Raiders registered four sacks and allowed only 44 rushing yards. Senior Carlton Walker had two sacks, while junior defensive end Lamont Sonds had seven tackles and a sack. Furthermore, Colgate allowed its smallest point total since November 1, 2007, when the Raiders defeated the Lehigh Mountain Hawks 21-7 at Andy Kerr Stadium.

CORNELL NOTEBOOK
Cornell is led on offense by quarterback Ben Ganter and wider receiver Bryan Walters. Ganter has thrown two touchdown passes on the season both to Walters, who is averaging 21.0 yards per catch. Walters also handles kickoff and punt returns for the Big Red.

1,000 YARD RUSHING CLUB
Against Stony Brook Greg Sullivan became just the third quarterback in school history to reach 1,000 yards rushing. The all-time leader is Tom Parr who finished his career in 1974 with 2,221 when Colgate was running the wishbone.
Against Monmouth Nate Eachus became just the 26th Colgate player to ever reach 1,000 rushing yards in his career. He currently sits 25th with 1,071 yards, just four yards behind 24th.

CAREER RECEIVING CHART
Senior wide receiver Pat Simonds has moved into fifth place on the school's all-time receiving yardage list with 2,181 yards on 128 catches. Simonds leads the Patriot League in scoring averaging 10.0 points per game.

MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Dating back to last season Pat Simonds has caught a touchdown pass in seven straight games - total of 12 during that span.

BY THE NUMBERS
    • Colgate has won 63 of its last 90 games.
    • Colgate has won 63 of its last 80 Patriot League games.
    • Colgate has won 28 of its last 41 games decided by nine points or less.
    • Colgate has won 35 of its last 43 games at Andy Kerr Stadium.

THE BIDDLE ERA
Last season became a major milestone in the coaching career of Colgate head coach Dick Biddle.  On September 7, Biddle became the winningest football coach in school history with his 97th victory, passing the legendary Andy Kerr.
Entering his 14th season with the Raiders, Biddle has an overall mark of 108-49. He has achieved the best winning percentage (.685) of any Colgate coach with seven or more years at the helm of the Raiders.  Biddle is also the first Colgate coach to ever record nine straight seasons with seven or more victories.
He has been named Patriot League Coach of the Year four times while guiding the Raiders to six Patriot League titles and six appearances in the FCS (formally I-AA) playoffs.
In 2003, Biddle was named the American Football Coaches Association Division I-AA National Coach of the Year after leading the Raiders to a 15-1 record, and to the national championship game of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.
   
VOTE FOR BIDDLE
Colgate head coach Dick Biddle is a front-runner for the 2009 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award voted on by fans.
The award provides each coach with $50,000 to donate to the charity or charities of his choice, as well as a $20,000 grant to donate to his school's alumni association.

ON DEFENSE
Seniors Uzi Idah and Garrington Spence lead the Raiders in tackles with 25 followed by Greg Hadley and Vinnie Nicosia with 22. Spence and Coree Moses lead the team with one interception apiece, while Spence returned his for a touchdown.   

DIFFERENT STYLES
The game will feature contrasting styles. Colgate is currently ranked first in the country with 260.25 rushing yards per game, while Cornell is ranked 94th with 94.5. Colgate is ranked 12th in the country in total offense (421.5 ypg), while Cornell is 103rd (245.0 ypg).
Defensively, both teams are solid, the Raiders are ranked 22nd in total defense (273.25 ypg), while Cornell is 20th (267.0 ypg).

MAKE IT A DOZEN
Dating back to last season the Raiders have won 12-straight regular season games.

2009 HONORS
Quarterback Greg Sullivan was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week following his performance against Fordham.
Tailback Jordan McCord was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week and ECAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week following his performance against Dartmouth.
Sullivan was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week and ECAC Offensive Player of the Week following his performance against Stony Brook.
Wide receiver Pat Simonds was named to the 2009 Sports Network preseason FCS All-America Team.

RANKED AND RECEIVING VOTES
Colgate is ranked 25th in the Sports Network poll and receiving votes in the FCS Coaches Polls. The Raiders received 192 points in the Sports Network poll and 24 votes in the FCS Coaches poll.

COLGATE VS. NON-CONFERENCE TEAMS UNDER BIDDLE
In 14 seasons under head coach Dick Biddle, the Raiders are 45-33 against non-conference teams for a winning percentage of .571. They have 32-8 mark against the Ivy League.

COLGATE VS. IVY LEAGUE TEAMS
During the 13-year tenure of Colgate head coach Dick Biddle, the Raiders are 32-8 against Ivy League competition.

UP NEXT
Colgate will travel to Princeton Thursday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. on ESPNU at Princeton Stadium. The Raiders topped Princeton 27-24 last season and have a 6-3 record against the Tigers during the Biddle era.
