Lehigh Tops Colgate Women, 71-42

HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/18/09) -   Alex Ross scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Lehigh to a 71-42 victory against the Colgate University women's basketball team Wednesday night at Cotterell Court.  

 

Kelly Korkowski (Williamsburg, Va.) led the Raiders with nine points, while three other Colgate players scored seven points.  Holly Havenstein (Mt. Airy, Md.), Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Gretchen Polinski (Mansfield, Ohio) each registered seven points with Polinski adding a game-high seven rebounds.  

 

Lehigh started off strong from three-point range, with Ross knocking back-to-back three's in first four minutes to give the Mountain Hawks an 8-2 lead.  Ross extended Lehigh's advantage to eleven hitting another shot from behind the arc to make it 13-2 with 14:37 on the clock.  

 

Colgate's Havenstein put in a lay-up and Moser added two consecutive baskets to cut Lehigh's lead to five, 13-8.  The Mountain Hawks however, responded with a 9-4 run to gain a 10 point lead, 22-12, with 4:22 left in the half.  Candice Green (East Brunswick, N.J.) hit the Raiders first three-pointer of the game, but Ross put up another five points to lead Lehigh to a 14 point lead, 31-17, at the half-time break.

 

The Raiders shot 31.8 percent (7-22) in the first half while out-rebounding the Mountain Hawks, 16-15.  Lehigh finished the half on 44.4 percent (12-27) shooting including 5-7 (71.4 percent) for three-point range.  

 

Colgate opened the second half with a 6-3 run to cut Lehigh's lead to nine, 34-25, with 15:47 on the clock.  The two teams traded baskets for the next few minutes, but Erica Prosser and Ross each knocked down shots from behind the arc to give the Mountain Hawks their largest lead of the game so far, 53-34.  Lehigh had six different players post points as they went on an 18-8 run to win the game 71-42.

 

Ross led the Mountain Hawks, going 7-8 from three-point range.  Prosser added another 10 points for Lehigh, while three players had a team-high five rebounds.

 

Colgate finished the game shooting 34.7 percent (17-49) from the floor.  Lehigh shot 49.0 percent (25-51) from the field and 56.3 percent (9-16) from three-point range.  The Mountain Hawks led on the boards 34-29.

 

The Raiders will be back in action this Saturday when they face Bucknell on the road.
