Raiders Win Overtime Thriller at Princeton 21-14

PRINCETON, N.J. (10/8/09)
- Sophomore running back Nate Eachus (Drums, Pa.) ran for 98 yards and two touchdowns as the No.23-ranked Colgate Raiders defeated Princeton 21-14 in double overtime on ESPNU. Eachus scored on a pair of two-yard touchdown runs in both the first and second overtime periods.

The game was a battle of wills, as both defenses played spectacular football. Colgate held Princeton scoreless for over 50 minutes before Princeton quarterback Tommy Wornham threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Trey Peacock with 9:45 remaining in the fourth quarter, tying the game 7-7. On the other side, the Princeton defense did not allow a Colgate runner to reach over 100 yards. It marks only the second time since 2006 that a Colgate runner did not reach the century mark in rushing yards.

Junior quarterback Greg Sullivan (Monroe, N.Y.) got the first score of the game after a 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. That touchdown was set up by an interception from junior safety Mike Barry (Naples, Fla.), who returned the pick to the Princeton 36. A pair of runs from Eachus gave the Raiders a first down, but then the drive temporarily stalled. On 4th-and-7 from the 21, Sullivan found senior wide receiver Pat Simonds (Sidney, N.Y.) on an out route at the Princeton 1-yard line. Simonds ran a great route and found space in the Princeton zone defense, and Sullivan issued a great pass on the play. Sullivan then ran the pigskin in for the touchdown.

Before the half ended, Princeton kicker Ben Bologna missed two short field goal attempts, both of which were low liners that went straight into the line.

Colgate opened the third quarter with a great defensive stand, as senior defensive end Austin Douglas sacked Wornham on 4th-and-3 from the Colgate 28. The Raiders punted back to the Tigers on their next drive, and Princeton once again drove down the field. On 4th-and-5 from the Colgate 32, junior Coreé Moses (Newington, Conn.) made a huge tackle on running back Matt Zimmerman for a loss of 2 yards.

After Colgate failed to convert on 4th-and-19 from the Princeton 34 in the beginning of the fourth quarter, Princeton went on a 6 play, 66-yard touchdown drive, ending with Wornham's touchdown pass to Peacock. Wornham found Peacock open down the middle of the field on 3rd-and-8 on the play. Wornham also hit Peacock on a 26-yard pass to open the drive.

The Raiders drove down to the Princeton 29 on their next drive, but could not convert a 4th-and-10 from there. Princeton then got the ball and was forced to punt after senior defensive end Juliues Barlay (Atlanta, Ga.) sacked Wornham on 3rd-and-10.

Colgate had one last chance to score before the half and moved the ball into Princeton territory, but an intentional grounding penalty stalled the drive, and the Raiders were forced to punt. The Tigers ran out the fourth quarter clock.

Princeton started with the ball in the first overtime and scored a touchdown after Wornham threw another touchdown pass down the middle of the field, this time a 23-yarder to Andrew Kerr on 3rd-and-8. The PAT gave Princeton a 14-7 lead.

Colgate responded with a heavy dose of rushing down the middle of Princeton's defensive line. It took five rushes from Eachus and Sullivan to get into the end zone, with Eachus delivering the final blow from two yards out. The PAT from Evan Colborne (Tampa, Fla.) tied the game at 14.

The Raiders started with the ball in the second overtime. Three rushes moved the football to the 16-yard line, with Colgate needing one yard on fourth down to keep the drive alive. Eachus dove for the 15-yard marker and got Colgate the first down after getting hit in the backfield. Eachus' number was called again on 3rd-and-1 from the six, and got the first down by half a football length. Two rushes later, Eachus was in the end zone for six points. The PAT gave Colgate a 21-14 advantage.

Princeton needed to score a touchdown to keep the game alive. Three plays only gave the Tigers one yard, and on 4th-and-9, a Wornham pass to Peacock fell incomplete, ending the longest game in Colgate history.

The defensive effort for Colgate was simply outstanding. Senior linebacker Greg Hadley (Fayetteville, N.Y.) had a fantastic game for the Raiders, making 11 tackles. He also made a huge solo tackle in the first quarter when Princeton went for it on 4th-and-1 from the Colgate 16. Moses made seven tackles, and Douglas had two sacks.

Colgate will now play the first of five straight Patriot League games on Saturday, October 18, when the Raiders travel to face Georgetown in Washington D.C.

Game Notes…This is the first overtime contest since Colgate's 31-28 comeback win over Dartmouth in 2007…Eachus has now scored at least two touchdowns in all three games he has played this season…The Raider defense has now only allowed two offensive touchdowns or fewer in all but one game played this season…Colgate has now gone 6-0 for the fourth time since 1976.
