Women’s Basketball Falls Short to Lafayette in Final Minutes

Oakes recorded her second consecutive double-double against Lafayette

HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/14/09) -   Tricia Oakes (Evergreen, Colo.) recorded her second consecutive double-double as the Colgate University women's basketball team fell 64-52 to Patriot League opponent Lafayette in the final minutes of play at Cotterell Court. Lafayette's LaKeisha Wright led all scorers with 16 points and three assists.

 

Oakes posted 12 points and 10 boards on her way to her second consecutive and third career double-double Wednesday evening.  Kelly Korkowski (Williamsburg, Va.) had eight points for the Raiders and five rebounds.  Candice Green (East Brunswick, N.J) and Katie Garman (Poplar Grove, Ill.) had seven points each, while Georgia Gier (Mercer Island, Wash.) posted five rebounds.  

 

Colgate and Lafayette were back-and-forth throughout a first half that featured six lead changes and five ties.  The Leopards gained a five point lead, 11-6, about eight minutes into the game after getting several good looks in the paint.  The Raiders however, took the lead two minutes later, with 11:38 on the clock, as Oakes put in two free throws for a 12-11 advantage.

 

Lafayette responded with an 11-2 run to build the first solid lead of the game at 22-14.  Garman then connected on the Raiders first three-pointer of the half to spark a run that gave Colgate a one point lead, 31-30 with 1:57 remaining in the half.  The Leopards were able to head into the half up by five, 37-32 with a last second lay-up from Cristin Zavocki.

 

The Raiders finished the first half shooting 45.8 percent (11-24) from the floor and 60.0 percent (3-5) from behind the arc.  Colgate also out-rebounded the Leopards, 17-12 in the first stanza.  Lafayette closed the half with 53.6 percent shooting (15-28) from the field and went 2-2 from three-point range.

 

The Leopards jumped out to a seven point lead early in the second half with a 39-32 advantage just 21 seconds into the half.  Colgate quickly cut that lead to one with a three from Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) and three more points from Green.  The next six minutes were back-and-forth with Colgate taking its first lead of the second after Korkowski knocked down a shot with 9:28 on the clock.

 

With just over three minutes left in the game, the score was still tied at 50.  The Leopards began to pull away in the final two minutes of action, going on a 10-1 run with 2:16 on the clock, to win the game 64-52.

 

Colgate shot 41.5 percent (17-41) overall and 66.7 percent (14-21) from the free throw line.  The Leopards finished with 47.9 percent (23-48) shooting from the floor and 72.7 percent (16-22) from the charity stripe.  The Raiders came out on top on the boards, 34-21.

 

The Raiders will now take to the road to play American in Washington, D.C. on Saturday.  Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
