HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/13/08) – Quarterback Jordan Sorrells connected on 15-of-23 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns to lead nationally ranked Furman (2-1) to a 42-21 win over Colgate (1-2) Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium.
Furman, #23 in the latest FCS Coaches Poll, rolled to 515 yards of total offense, getting 304 on the ground and 211 through the air. Colgate managed 342 yards including 159 rushing and 183 passing.
Colgate senior tailback
Jordan Scott (Hyattsville, MD) carried 19 times for 113 yards for his school-record 15
th straight game over 100 yards rushing. He scored two touchdowns.
The Raiders took the opening kickoff and marched 74 yards for a 7-0 lead on Scott’s four-yard run.
Jacob Stein (St. Petersburg, FL) added the extra point. The Paladins came right back with a 10-play, 66-yard drive to tie the contest on Tersoo Uhaa’s six-yard touchdown grab from Sorrells.
After stopping Colgate on its next possession, Furman upped its lead to 14-7 at 13:03 of the second quarter on Mike Brown’s eight-yard run. Later in the quarter, the Paladins added a 23-yard field goal by Matthew Cesari for a 17-7 lead with 2:48 left in the opening half.
The Raiders took over on their own 31-yard with 2:42 left in the first half, and marched 69 yards in eight plays for a touchdown. Quarterback
Greg Sullivan (Monroe, NY) carried for the final nine yards, scoring with 43 seconds left.
Furman took advantage of a short kickoff that Brown returned 38 yards to the Colgate 36 with 33 seconds remaining. Colgate’s defense limited the Paladins to a 28-yard field goal giving the visitors a 20-14 halftime advantage.
In the third quarter, Furman increased its lead to 28-14 on a 23-yard pass play from Sorrells to tight end Larry Hedden. On Colgate’s next possession, Scott scored on a 24-yard run on fourth-and-one to bring back the Raiders to within one touchdown, 28-21.
Furman closed out the scoring on a 15-yard run by Uhaa in the third quarter, and Sorrells’ one-yard pass to Seth Skogen on fourth-and-goal with 12:03 left in the game.
Colgate’s standout wide receiver
Pat Simonds (Sidney, NY) had a personal best nine catches for 98 yards, while Sullivan connected on 17-of-21 passes for 183 yards and carried 12 times for 48 yards and one TD.
