POTSDAM, N.Y. (12/6/2008) – The Colgate University women’s hockey team escaped with a 2-2 tie against Clarkson as the horn sounded Saturday, Dec. 6 at Cheel Arena. The Golden Knights scored a goal as time expired in overtime but was ruled no goal after a long official review.
Clarkson freshman Juana Baribeau took the shot with a second remaining that made it past freshman goaltender
Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) as the horn blew. After a lengthy review by the officials it was ruled no goal giving Colgate its second tie of the season.
Clarkson (8-6-4, 4-2-2) opened the scoring at 8:31 in the first when Genevieve Lavoie deflected a high shot down past Sass. The initial shot was taken from just inside the blue line during the closing seconds of a Golden Knights power-play by Britney Selina. The shot was sailing high until Lavoie batted it down past Sass who was standing tall. The Golden Knights would extend their lead to 2-0 three minutes later on a well executed power-play goal by Melissa Waldie.
Junior
Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) would put Colgate on the board at 17:20 during a two on one breakaway. Dombovy received a nice pass from senior
Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) and was able to slide the puck past Clarkson goaltender Lauren Dahm.
Senior
Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) tied the game 2-2 a minute into the second as the Raiders began the period on the power-play. Dosdall was outside the blue line dumping the puck into the Golden Knights zone when it took an awkward bounce a rolled past Dahm for her fourth of the season.
Both squads went scoreless in the third but had plenty of chances as both goalies came up big. The Raiders began the period on the power-play and issued three shots but couldn’t capitalize. Sass made an incredible glove save with five minutes remaining sliding from her right to left to keep the score tied. Sass then made back-to-back saves in the closing seconds to force overtime.
In overtime Clarkson out-shot the Raiders 4-1, including Baribeau’s shot, but it wasn’t enough.
Colgate held a slight 23-21 edge in shots on net, with Sass making 19 saves and Dahm stopping 21.
Colgate went 1-for-5 on the power play and was 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.
Colgate improves to 8-8-2 overall and will take a three-week break for finals and the holidays. The Raiders return to the ice on Jan. 2 when they host Boston College at Starr Rink.
