Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) made a career high 46 saves and junior
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) recorded two goals as the Colgate women’s hockey team defeated Princeton 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink. This was Colgate’s first-ever regular season victory over the Tigers ending a 16-game drought.
Colgate, 6-5 overall and 1-1 in ECAC Hockey struck first in the opening period as Stewart pounded in her first of the game beating Princeton goaltender Kristen Young. Junior
Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) took the initial shot from the left circle as Stewart crashed the net. Stewart’s hard work paid off lighting the lamp at 11:27.
Princeton was able to respond four minutes later capitalizing on its third power-play of the period as Paula Romanchuk snuck one past Sass after receiving the puck off the boards. Sasha Sherry set up a one-timer to Laura Martindale who sent the shot three feet wide to Sass’ right, the puck then ricocheted off the back boards to Romanchuk who was able sneak the puck past a sliding Sass.
Sass faced four Tiger power-plays and 14 shots in the opening period as she kept the score tied 1-1 during the first break.
Both teams came out firing in the second period as Colgate broke the 1-1 tie when junior
Nicole McDonald (Calgary, Alta) found the back of the net with just less then three minutes remaining. Senior
Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) found McDonald alone at center ice, McDonald then took the puck straight to the net beating Young for her first of the season.
The raiders out shot Princeton 15-14 in the second period to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
Stewart extended the Colgate lead to 3-1 with her second of the game at the 13:45 mark of the third. Seniors
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) and
Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) both assisted on the power play goal that was more then enough for Sass.
Sass recorded 19 saves in the closing period including eight in the final two minutes as Princeton pulled its goalie for an extra attacker. Hunt was called for tripping with 55 seconds remaining to give the Tigers a six on four advantage but is wasn’t enough as Sass made key save after key save including a diving save off her stick in the final seconds to secure her fourth win in as many starts.
The Tigers out-shot Colgate 47-28 for the game. The Raiders finished 1-5 on the power play while the Princeton went 1-10.
Colgate 6-5 overall 1-1 in league play will return to action next Friday as it hosts Yale at 7 p.m.
