PRINCETON, N.J. (11/8/08) – Kevin Lohry netted the game winner close to the midway point of overtime as defending ECAC Hockey champion and ninth-ranked Princeton edged Colgate 2-1, Saturday afternoon in men’s action at Hobey Baker Rink.
The sophomore collected the puck in front of the cage following a ricochet off the skate of Brandon Kushniruk and put it by
Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) at 2:16 of the extra session. With the victory, Princeton improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in league action, while the Raiders fell to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in ECAC Hockey action.
The Tigers got things going early in the game at 1:15 as Brett Wilson knocked in a rebound for his second of the season off an initial shot by Mike Kamer.
After a scoreless second period, Colgate solved Princeton’s Zane Kalemba with 4:26 left in the game as
Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) circled behind the net and slid the puck by the junior netminder for his second collegiate score.
Ethan Cox (Richmond, B.C.) and
Corbin McPherson (Folsom, Calif.) were each credited for assists on Smith’s goal. For McPherson, it was his first collegiate point.
After knotting up the game, Colgate needed to kill off a Tigers’ power play in the final 46 seconds in the third period to force overtime. The Raiders stopped Princeton on all four of its man advantages, which stretches their streak to 26 consecutive killed opponent power plays. Opponents are 1 of 33 against Colgate with the man advantage. The Raiders failed in all three of its power play opportunities.
Long posted his most saves since his freshman season by turning aside 32 shots, including 10 in the third period and four in overtime. Kalemba stopped 26 shots in the win.
