Raiders Fall Short to Brown, 4-3, in Women's Hockey

HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/15/2008) – Nicole Brown recorded a goal mid-way through the third period to give Brown a 4-3 win over Colgate University women’s hockey team, Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink. The loss for the Raiders was the first against Brown since 2006.
 
Colgate opened the scoring three minutes into the contest when senior Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) slid one past the Bears goaltender Nicole Stock. Brown’s goal came on the power-play and was her fourth of the season. Brown was assisted by junior Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) and senior Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.).
 
The Bears answered back two-half minutes later as Sasha Van Muyen chipped one past freshman Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.). Junior Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) quickly followed with the Raiders second power-play goal of the period to give Colgate a 2-1 lead at the 6:48 mark.
 
Paige Pyett would record Brown’s first power-play goal with just over four minutes remaining to knot the score 2-2 for the first intermission.
 
Both teams exchanged goals in the second period as sophomore Jacquie Colborne (Calgary, Alta.) struck first eight minutes in then was matched by the Bears second power-play goal of the game eight minutes later. Colborne’s goal was assisted by Hunt and junior Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.).
 
The Raiders out-shot Brown 28-16 in the opening periods but it wasn’t enough as the scored remained tied 3-3 heading into the third.
   
Brown came out firing in the third period out-shooting the Raiders 12-7 to finally grab its first and only lead of the game mid-way through. The Raiders received three power-play opportunities in the final period but wasn’t able to cash in as they dropped their second league game of the season 4-3.
 
The Raiders out-shot the Brown 35-28 for the game. Sass made 24 saves in the loss while Stock recorded 32 for Brown. Colgate finished 2-8 on the power play while the Bears went 2-6.
 
Colgate 7-6 overall 2-2 in league play returns to action next Friday (Nov. 21) as it travels to Harvard. The contest is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
