Raiders Upset No. 8 Dartmouth, 2-1 in OT

Junior Elin Brown tallied the equalizer and set up the game winner as Colgate earned a 2-1 win over nationally-ranked Dartmouth on the road.

HANOVER, N.H. (1/4/08) – Sophomore Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) scored at 2:58 in overtime to give the Colgate University women’s hockey team a 2-1 win over No. 8 Dartmouth College on Friday, Jan. 4 at Thompson Arena.

Dombovy picked up a feed from junior Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) and slipped a shot five hole on Carli Clemis. The puck slowly trickled over the goal line, sparking a Colgate bench clearing.

It marks the second straight season that the Raiders have beaten the Big Green on their home ice during the regular season. Coincidentally it was Brown and Dombovy that paired up for the game winner over the Big Green in that game as well.

Colgate’s skates didn’t show any sign of rust, after having not played a game in about a month, as the Raiders kept pace with Dartmouth in the first period. Both netminders were kept on her respective toes in the early going, with Colgate’s Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) making nine stops and Dartmouth’s Clemis making eight stops.

Just over three minutes in, Colgate went on the power play after a skater was sent crashing into the net. Freshman Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.) had a great look at the goal but the puck deflected off a defender and was sent out of play. Dartmouth’s Sarah Parsons caught Colgate in a line change, picking up the puck at center ice and skating in just as Colgate re-entered the ice. Her shot was quickly turned away by Plenderleith at the cage.

Sophomore Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) had a chance midway through the period as the puck bounced of Clemis and back out onto the paint, but a Big Green defender cleared the puck behind the net to prevent any damage.

Stewart tried again to get one over the goal line when she intercepted the puck and had a short-handed chance get collected by Clemis’ pads. Dartmouth’s Maggie Kennedy answered right back, bringing the puck in on Plenderleith but ringing it off the post.

Dartmouth was able to light the lamp, eight seconds into its second power play of the game. Parsons positioned at the point, sent the puck to Kennedy on the left boards, and Kennedy slipped the puck to Sarah Newnam in the slot and had the clean shot at the left side of the net at 13:12.

Determined to get on the board, Stewart set up a great pass to teammate Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) leaving the puck in the slot, but Clemis came out of her net to poke the puck away and it was picked up by a Dartmouth skater.

Colgate continued to attack the net in the second session, and the hard work paid off when Brown found the twine at 17:53. Sophomore Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) fed Brown the puck and Brown fired a shot from the top of the right face-off circle for the goal.

Senior Kara Leene (Waterbury, Vt.) blasted a shot at the goal but Clemis came up with a save just over a minute into the period but not to be outdone, Plenderleith stacked her bags to deny a Sarah Toupal shot one minute later.

The Raiders nearly got on the scoreboard four minutes in, when Stewart slid a terrific cross-ice pass to Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.). Dosdall rifled a shot that went over the shoulder of Clemis and rolled off the cross bar and to the right of the net.

New linemates Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) and Leene paired up for a great play at the midway point of the period. Leene skated into the zone and as she entered the circle, passed the puck to Rotenberg on the left side and Clemis had to slide across the goalmouth and making a rolling save.

The third period was held scoreless with Colgate taking a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Dartmouth’s Marley McMillan hit the post five minutes into the final frame and the goal light came on, but the official signaled a no goal and play resumed.

Colgate had three shots on net, two of which were by Dombovy, in the extra session and Dartmouth had just one. Dombovy whipped a shot but Clemis made a glove grab, but couldn’t cover up Dombovy’s second shot a minute later.

Shots ended even at 28 apiece, with Plenderleith making 27 saves and Clemis, 26.

Colgate improves to 7-8-2 overall and 4-2-1 in ECAC Hockey and extends its unbeaten streak to four, while Dartmouth falls to 10-4-1 and 7-3 in league play.

The Raiders will get another big test tomorrow when they take on No. 3 Harvard on Saturday, Jan. 5 at Bright Hockey Center at 4 p.m.
