PROVIDENCE, R.I. (1/26/08) – The Colgate University women’s hockey team posted a 3-3 tie with Brown University on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Meehan Auditorium, despite outshooting the Bears, 57-22. For the second straight game, junior
Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) led the Raiders offensively with three assists.
Colgate took an early 1-0 lead but penalties hurt the Raiders, helping the Bears to a 2-1 edge to close out the first period. The teams traded goals in the middle frame before Colgate tallied the equalizer on the man advantage in the third period.
Colgate kept the puck down in the Bears’ zone for the majority of the first period, pepping the goal with shots. Netminder Nicole Stock was kept busy making 14 saves, as the Raiders outshot the Bears 15-9 in the period.
The Raiders capitalized on its first power-play opportunity, six minutes into the opening frame. Colgate’s Brown brought the puck out of the corner and sent it up the ice to sophomore
Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) who was in the circle. Minnick sent a shot in on net with senior
Kara Leene (Waterbury, Vt.) in good position to knock in a rebound on the right side, but it wasn’t necessary as Minnick’s shot sailed over the shoulder of Stock. Sophomore
Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) also received credit on the goal.
Sophomore
Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) nearly gave Colgate a 2-0 lead with just over five minutes to play in the period after she sent the puck five hole on Stock, the puck stopped just in the paint behind Stock, but she covered before any Raiders could get there to tap it in.
The Bears took a 2-1 lead with back-to-back power-play goals in the final two minutes of the period.
With a Raider in the box for a two-minute infraction, another Raider earned two two-minute penalties to force Colgate to play with just three players for 1:12. Erica Kromm scored the Bears’ first goal, a 5x3, with help from Jenny Cedorchuk and Sasha Van Muyen at 18:26. Hayley Moore made it 2-1 with a 5x4 power-play goal with just 39.6 seconds to play after a scramble out front. Rylee Olewinski and Kromm picked up assists on the goal.
Brown took a 3-1 lead in the second period with a give-and-go-goal with Smith and Kath Surbey. Smith took the puck down the left side and fed Surbey a perfect pass to be able to tuck the puck under the crossbar at 7:51.
Freshman
Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.) brought the contest within one less than a minute later when she redirected a Minnick shot in the slot. Brown was credited with the fed to Minnick, bringing the puck off the boards.
The Raiders kept hammering the net to try to get the equalizer, but Stock, who sports the eighth best save percentage in the nation, was solid in net making 18 stops.
Colgate finally found the game-tying goal with just over seven minutes remaining, a power-play goal from
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.). Dosdall had a shot at the point that was saved by Stock put rebounded back out to Hunt who flipped it in over Stock at 12:32.
The Bears almost got a fourth goal after a rebound popped out to the right side, and Rylee Olewinski tried to put it in with a back hand but couldn’t ge the shot off. Colgate goaltender
Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) made a terrific sliding stop with under three minutes to play, taking a Van Muyen shot in the breadbasket.
With 19.1 seconds left Brown almost got one by Stock but she stopped it between her pads to force the overtime.
The Raiders dominated the extra session, not allowing the Bears to get a single shot off. Leene brought the puck down and tried a wrap around and Waters followed up with a shot on goal. Stock made a glove grab off a
Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, R.I.) slap shot and Dombovy put two more shots on goal.
Plenderleith made 18 saves, while Stock finished the night with 54 stops.
Colgate went 2-for-9 on the power play and 2-for-4 on the penalty kill.
