HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/26/08) - Colgate University senior goaltender
Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) made 18 saves to earn his eighth career shutout in a 5-0 win over visiting Brown on Saturday, Jan. 26, at Starr Rink. With the blanking, Dekanich ties former teammate Steve Silverthorn for the Colgate career shutouts record. The win puts the Raiders back at .500 on the year (10-10-4, 4-5-3 ECAC Hockey), while the Bears extend their winless streak to 15 games (1-14-4, 1-8-3 ECAC Hockey).
Sophomore
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) led the Raider offense with two goals and an assist. Senior captain
Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.), junior
Mark Anderson (Hastings, Neb.) and sophomore
Jason Williams (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) all had a goal and an assist.
Anderson put Colgate's offense in gear midway through the first period. Winchester received a pass from freshman
Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.), then shot on net from the left side. The rebound went onto Anderson's stick at the right dot, and he beat Brown goalie Dan Rosen stick-side.
With 31 seconds left in the opening frame, Colgate netted a power-play goal to make it 2-0. After working the puck low, McIntyre passed it to Anderson, who was open in the high slot. Anderson's wrist shot went through traffic and was deflected into the net by Williams.
Winchester tacked on another power-play goal five minutes into the second period. After cycling the puck out of the right corner, junior
Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) sent a quick pass to Winchester in the slot. Winchester turned and used a backhand shot to slip the puck under Rosen's pad.
Colgate struck again with time winding down in the second period. McIntyre forced Brown to turn the puck over at the Bears' defensive blue line along the left boards before they could clear the zone. He knocked it over to Burton in the slot before skating into the left circle. After McIntyre beat his defender, Burton returned the puck to him, and he rifled a wrist shot past Rosen, just inside the post, stick-side.
McIntyre netted his second goal of the night just 83 seconds into the third period. Williams broke the puck out of Colgate's defensive end with a pass to junior
Tom Riley (Ottawa, Ont.) in the neutral zone. Riley sent a cross-ice pass to McIntyre, who was streaking down the left side. McIntyre took the puck on his forehand, deked to his backhand, and scored five-hole.
Rosen finished the game with 35 saves as Colgate outshot Brown 40-18 on the night, including 15-4 in the third period. The Raiders went 3-for-8 on the power play and shut down all five Brown power-play attempts. Colgate earned a 35-25 advantage on faceoffs, including 16 wins for Winchester on 25 attempts.
The game was the 100th of Dekanich's career, which ties him for second with Silverthorn among Raider goalies all-time. In addition to tying the shutouts record, Dekanich moved into second place on Colgate's career saves list this weekend, passing Dan Brenzavich (1995-98), and he now has 2,608 career stops.
