Brown Paces Raiders to 4-1 Win Over Yale

Junior Elin Brown had a four-point night as Colgate earned a 4-1 win over Yale on the road.
 
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (1/25/08) – The Colgate University women’s hockey team cruised to a 4-1 win over Yale University on Friday, Jan. 25 at Ingalls Arena in New Haven, Conn. The Raiders were paced by junior Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) who collected four points with a goal and three helpers.
 
Colgate improves to 9-11-3 overall and 6-5-2 in ECAC Hockey play, which moves the Raiders into fifth place in the league standings. Yale falls to 8-8-4 and 5-6-2 in the league.
 
Sophomores Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) and junior Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) each had two-point outings. Hunt’s two points moves her into fifth place on Colgate’s all-time scoring list, as she inches within seven points of reaching the century mark.
 
Colgate had a couple of chances to score in the early going, with Yale netminder Shivon Zilis taking away an over-the-shoulder goal from junior Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) and stopping a Brown shot that came off a face-off deep in the zone.
 
Freshman Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) came up with a big stop midway through the first period, after Sarah Tittman sent a pass right to the tape of Caroline Murphy who was all alone in the neutral zone. Murphy skated in on net but Plenderleith came up with the save.
 
Brown had the first strike for Colgate at 9:40 of the second stanza. Minnick won a face off deep in the zone and Dombovy swept the puck towards the goal where Brown stretched out her stick and tipped it over the sprawled Zilis to light the lamp.
 
Colgate jumped out front 2-0, with a power-play goal at 3:17 of the second. Brown found Hunt open on the left side and Hunt centered the puck to Dosdall who fired a shot that went over the shoulder of Zilis.
 
Yale cut the lead back to one with a power-play goal of its own just under six minutes later, when Maggie Westfal knocked in a rebound at 9:14 with help from Tittman and Bray Ketchum.
 
The Raiders expanded the lead at 12:59 when Brown sent Dombovy the puck off the near boards and Dombovy turned a nailed the puck into the back of the net. Minnick also received credit on the goal.
 
Yale called a timeout with under five minutes to play and would switch between utilizing Zilis and an extra attacker for the remainder of the game.
 
Hunt sealed the win for Colgate with an empty-net goal at 19:24, with Brown and junior Laura Jansen (Wilmette, Ill.) earning assists.
 
Plenderleith made 21 saves and Zilis stopped 23 shots, as Colgate held a 27-22 shot advantage.
 
The Raiders went 1-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.
 
Colgate will travel to Brown tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 26 for a 4 p.m., face off.
