Mike Venezia (Westfield, NJ) tallied 10 points to lead Colgate to a 50-44 win over Army in the Patriot League opener for both teams Saturday at Cotterell Court.
Colgate (9-6, PL 1-0) wins its seventh straight game over the Cadets, and extends its winning streak over Patriot League service academies to 11 straight games.
Other top scorers for Colgate were
Kendall Chones (Cleveland, OH) with nine points and
Kyle Roemer (Martinez, CA) with seven. Army (7-8, PL 0-1) was led by Tyrell Thompson with 10 points and Jarell Brown with eight.
Alex Woodhouse (Alexandria, VA) had a game-high eight rebounds for the Raiders, while Doug Williams grabbed six for the Cadets.
Colgate jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a 3-point basket by
Daniel Waddy (Tucson, AZ) and
Tim Pounds’ (Dudley, NC) layup and never looked back in the contest. The Raiders broke open the game in first half with a 10-point run for a 17-4 lead with 11:44 left. Colgate later extended its lead to 14 points before settling for a 28-18 halftime lead.
In the second half, the closest Army would come was four points with 24 seconds left, 48-44, before
Ben Jonson’s (Dallas, TX) layup with 18 seconds remaining sealed the victory for the Raiders.
