HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/12/08)—Colgate University freshman
Jacquie Colborne (Calgary, Alta) registered a power-play goal in the second period as the Raiders skated to a 1-1 tie with Rensselaer in ECAC Women’s Hockey this afternoon at Starr Rink. RPI’s Allysen Weidner scored the tying goal late in the third period to help the Engineers the point.
The Raiders move to 8-9-3 overall and 5-3-2 in the league, while Rensselaer is 9-8-4 and 4-5-3 against conference foes.
Neither team could get its offenses going in the first period as the two squads combined for 14 shots and went 0-for-3 on the power play. Rensselaer nearly took a 1-0 lead with nearly six minutes left in the first period on a 5-on-3 power play. The Engineers swung the puck to the left corner of the crease and fired a high shot on net, but Colgate goaltender
Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) made an acrobatic save with her leg as she was lying on her back to keep the game scoreless. That proved to be the best opportunity of the period as the two teams skated to the first intermission knotted at zero.
Rensselaer came out firing in the second period, but it was the Raiders who capitalized on a pair of RPI penalties. Freshman defenseman
Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.) collected the puck on the right side of the ice and sent a pass to
Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) on the left post. Minnick one-timed the puck to Colborne who was on the doorstep and slipped the puck past the glove of goalie Sonja van der Bliek with 2:11 left to play in the second period.
The Colgate penalty kill continued to frustrate Rensselaer in the third period as the Engineers went 0-fof-4 on the power play. RPI kept up the pressure and broke through with the tying goal with 2:15 left in the third session when Weidner took a Kendra Dunlop pass and snuck it past Plenderleith to force overtime. The overtime session was an even affair with both teams getting two shots on goal.
Plenderleith finished with 29 saves in the game, while van der Bliek had 21. The Engineers outshot Colgate 30-22 for the game, but went 0-for-7 on the power play. Colgate was 1-for-7 on its extra attacker opportunities. Both teams had seven penalties for 14 minutes.
Colgate continues ECAC Hockey action on Jan. 18 at Clarkson at 7 p.m.
