TROY, N.Y. (2/9/07) – Rensselaer sophomore Matt Angers-Goulet netted the tying goal and then the game-winner in overtime to lead the Engineers to a 3-2 win against Colgate on Friday, Feb. 9, at Houston Field House. RPI improves to 9-13-7 overall and 5-8-4 in the ECACHL this year, while Colgate drops to 12-15-4 overall and 6-8-3 in league play.
The Engineers nabbed the tying goal at the 9:03 mark of the second period on the power play. Freshman Paul Kerins took the puck at the point and passed it down to junior Jonathan Ornelas in the right circle. Junior goaltender
Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) and the Raider defense focused on Ornelas, but he slipped the puck across the slot to sophomore Matt Angers-Goulet, who scored backdoor.
Neither team blinked for the next 30-plus minutes, and regulation wound down to force Rensselaer’s ninth overtime game of the season. The Raiders controlled play for the better part of the first 90 seconds of the extra session, but then the ice tilted in RPI’s favor. With 1:40 on the clock, Colgate got caught on a line change and turned the puck over at the blue line, giving Angers-Goulet a breakaway opportunity. Angers-Goulet beat Dekanich top-shelf to take the win.
Colgate had a chance at the go-ahead goal 7:54 into the third when it was granted its first penalty shot opportunity since the 2003-04 season. Rensselaer junior Jake Morissette took down Raider freshman
Jason Williams (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) as he was going to goal, to put Williams at center ice for a chance to go one-on-one with Engineer netminder Mathias Lange. Williams skated in, and Lange came out to meet him, but Williams missed the net with his shot.
Colgate jumped out to a 2-0 lead before 11:25 had ticked off the clock in the opening period, earning its first goal at the 8:27 mark. Senior
Marc Fulton (Vancouver, B.C.) took a pass from junior
Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) and shot from the right circle. Lange made the save, but gave up a rebound that came to junior
Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) on the left side, and he swept it into the open net.
Less than three minutes later, junior
Dustin Gillanders (Kyle, Sask.) used a heads-up pass to break freshmen
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) and Williams on a 2-on-1. McIntyre’s shot from the left side went wide, but it rattled around the boards to sophomore
Mark Anderson (Hastings, Neb.) at the right point. Anderson’s shot was deflected past Lange’s blocker by McIntyre in front.
With just over a minute left before the break, Rensselaer got on the board. Morissette worked the puck into the zone to senior Jake Luthi in the corner. Colgate senior
Alex Greig (Pickering, Ont.) checked Luthi into the boards, knocking the puck loose, but RPI senior Kirk MacDonald picked it up. He skated into the middle of the zone, wheeled between the circles, then rang a shot off the inside of the left post.
Lange earned the win after making 25 saves, while Dekanich finished with 20 stops as his Raiders outshot the Engineers 27-23.
The Raiders travel cross-town to Union for Saturday’s game, which begins at 7:00 p.m. Tonight, the Dutchmen came from behind to take Cornell to overtime, and the game finished in a 3-3 tie.
