HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/17/07) – Colgate and No. 20 Quinnipiac combined for five power-play goals, but the Bobcats came out on top, 3-2, on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Starr Rink. Heading into the evening games, the win gave Quinnipiac sole possession of third place in the league standings with a 10-6-4 ECACHL record, while Colgate remains in a tie for seventh place with a 7-10-3 conference mark.
Quinnipiac senior All-American Reid Cashman had a hand in all three of his team’s goals, including opening the scoring by finding the back of the net 14:33 into the game. The Bobcats gained control of the puck off the faceoff and set up in their zone. From low on the left side, junior Matt Sorteberg passed the puck up to freshman Brandon Wong at the left point. Wong crossed it to Cashman at the opposite point, and he fired a shot through a screen that went into the net off the left post.
With less than five minutes to play in the middle period, Cashman and Wong set up junior Jamie Bates for another power-play score. Wong and Bates were working the puck down low, and then Bates passed it up to Cashman near the blue line on the left side. Cashman put a shot on net, and Bates tipped it for his 12
th goal of the season.
Less than two minutes into the final frame, Colgate got on the board during a 5-on-3 power play. After setting up in the zone, sophomore
Nick St. Pierre (St. Etienne, Que.) played the puck D-to-D to classmate
David Sloane (Ambler, Pa.) at the left point. Sloane sent a slap shot on net, and Quinnipiac sophomore goalie Bud Fisher went down to make the save. However, Raider junior
Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) jammed at the puck between Fisher’s pads. The puck trickled loose in the crease, and junior
Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) was there to sweep it in.
The Bobcats re-established their two-goal lead less than five minutes later when Bates, Cashman and Wong struck again. Cashman threw the puck on goal from the corner, and Colgate junior goalie
Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) had trouble controlling it. Wong took a swipe at it before Bates deposited it into the cage.
The Raiders got back within striking distance with 4:51 on the clock. On the power play, St. Pierre passed the puck to Winchester on the half wall. Winchester skated up and sent a pass through the slot to senior
Marc Fulton (Vancouver, B.C.), who scored over Fisher’s outstretched arm, backdoor.
Both teams put 26 shots on net, giving Fisher 24 save in the win while Dekanich posted 23 stops. Quinnipiac was 3-for-9 on the power play, and Colgate was 2-for-10. Twelve of the Bobcats’ shots were on the man advantage, including eight in four attempts during the third period, while the Raiders attempted 11 shots on the power play. Colgate earned a 39-28 advantage on faceoffs.
