HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/16/07) – Princeton freshman Cam MacIntyre scored twice in the second period to lead his Tigers to a 2-1 win against Colgate on Friday, Feb. 16, at Starr Rink. The win gives Princeton a 8-9-2 mark in ECACHL play and moves the Tigers into sixth place in the league standings, while Colgate drops to 7-9-3 in the conference and into a tie for seventh with Harvard in the standings.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first period, but it wasn’t without trying – both teams put 13 shots on goal in the opening frame. MacIntyre broke the scoreless tie 7:04 into the middle session off a Colgate turnover. Princeton senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller intercepted a Raider pass on a break-out attempt, and sent the puck ahead to MacIntyre, whose weak wrist shot snuck under the arm of Colgate junior goaltender
Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.).
Just over seven minutes later, MacIntyre made it 2-0 for his Tigers. Princeton senior goaltender B.J. Sklapsky made a save on Raider freshman
Jason Williams’ (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) shorthanded attempt, and the puck rebounded into the slot, springing the Tigers on a 3-on-2 the other way. Driving down the right wing, Princeton senior captain Darroll Powe passed the puck back to MacIntyre, who buried a low shot, far-side.
The Raiders ruined Sklapsky’s shutout bid midway through the final frame. After combining for 18 of their team’s 38 shots on the night, Colgate’s top line of senior
Marc Fulton (Vancouver, B.C.), and juniors
Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) and
Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) managed to break through. Burton carried the puck into the zone, down the right side, and behind the net before finding Winchester at the side of the cage. Winchester completed the give-and-go with Burton, who sent a hard, low shot past Sklapsky to earn his 16
th goal of the season.
Sklapsky earned the win with 37 saves, while Dekanich finished with 29 stops. Princeton was 1-for-3 on the power play, and killed off all five Raider chances. Colgate earned a 38-37 edge in the faceoff circle, with Burton earning 23 of those wins while losing only nine times.
The Raiders host Quinnipiac, who is currently tied for third place in the league, on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Colgate will honor its four seniors prior to the game, which will be televised both on NESN and on Time Warner Sports in Upstate New York.
