HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/13/2007)—Colgate University had three players in double figures, but it was not enough as the Raiders fell to Lehigh University, 68-50, in Patriot League women’s basketball action this evening on Cotterell Court. Sophomore
Gretchen Polinski (Mansfield, Ohio) led all players with 17 points and eight rebounds.
The Raiders fall to 5-21 overall and 4-7 in Patriot League action, while Lehigh improves to 9-16 and 4-7 in conference action.
Freshman guard
TaHara Williams (Mason, Ohio) added 12 points for the Raiders, while junior
Caitlin Gillard (Vestal, N.Y.) got in double figures with 10 points. Freshman
Katie Garman (Poplar Grove, Ill.) grabbed eight caroms.
Ryan Ingalls led Lehigh with 11 points, while Alex Ross dropped in 10 points on the night. All 11 Mountain Hawk players got in the scoring column, with four players scoring eight points.
Colgate scored the opening bucket, but then Lehigh went on a 22-3 run over the next six minutes to go in front 22-5 at the 14:19 mark. The Raiders tried to cut into the deficit, but the Mountain Hawks continued to pull away, going in front by as many as 22 points with a 40-18 lead at the break.
The Raiders opened the second half with a three-pointer from Polinski to pull within 19, but Colgate could never get any closer than 16 points. Lehigh did not hit a single three-pointer in the second frame after going 4-of-9 in the first half.
Colgate was 4-for-6 from behind the arc in the second half and outscored the Mountain Hawks 32-28 in the second period.
For the game, the Raiders shot 32.7 percent from the floor and 45.5 percent from long range. Lehigh knocked down 47.5 percent of its shots from the field for the contest and just 28.6 percent from behind the arc. The Mountain Hawks edged Colgate on the glass, 37-33.
The Raiders hit the road for their next two games, traveling first to Bucknell on Feb. 17. That game is slated to tip off at 5 p.m., at Sojka Pavilion.
