SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (2/10/07) –
Colgate junior goaltender Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) made 35 saves, including 14 in the third period, to backstop his Raiders (13-15-4, 7-8-3 ECACHL) to a 3-1 win against Union (13-14-4, 6-11-1 ECACHL) on Saturday, Feb. 10, at Messa Rink.

Colgate got on the board 1:41 into the second period. The Raiders were set up on the power play, and cycled the puck up to junior Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) at the right point. He crossed it to senior Marc Fulton (Vancouver, B.C.) on the opposite side, and he fired at the net. Sophomore Nick St. Pierre (St. Etienne, Que.) tipped the puck past Union junior netminder Justin Mrazek for his seventh goal of the season.

The Raiders made it 2-0 at the 7:09 mark with another power-play score. Burton picked up the puck off the side of the net and skated it up along the boards. He cycled it down to Fulton on the right side, and he crossed it to junior Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) for a back-door goal.

The Dutchmen snapped a 219:23 scoreless streak against Colgate at Messa Rink when they found the back of the net with 38 seconds left in the second period. Freshman Jason Walters found senior captain Sean Streich at the top of the slot, and he fired a low shot through traffic that found its way past Dekanich.

Union used the momentum from its late goal to out-shoot Colgate 9-0 through the first 12 minutes of the final period. The Raiders were able to add a little pressure with a late power-play opportunity, but the Dutchmen kept coming. UC put Mrazek on the bench with just over a minute left in regulation, and the Raiders capitalized when sophomore Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) crossed the puck to classmate Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wis.) for the empty-net goal.

After the final whistle, tempers flared and a fight broke out in the corner to the right of the Union cage. Dutchman senior Olivier Bouchard received a game misconduct, and Raider junior Dustin Gillanders (Kyle, Sask.) was sent off with a game disqualification.

Mrazak posted 25 stops as Union outshot Colgate 36-28. The Raiders earned the advantage on faceoffs, 36-27, and finished 2-for-6 on the power play while shutting down all six Union extra-man attempts.

The Raiders return home for their final games at Starr Rink of the regular season. Friday’s game against Princeton begins at 7:00 p.m., and will be televised live on Time Warner Sports in Upstate New York. Colgate will honor its four seniors prior to Saturday’s contest against Quinnipiac. The game begins at 3:30 p.m., and will be televised live by NESN.
