Women's Basketball Suffers Setback Against Cornell

HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/18/07)—Colgate University sophomore guard Katie Garman (Poplar Grove, Ill.) led the Raiders with 12 points, four rebounds, and two steals in an 82-47 setback to Central New York rival Cornell University in women’s basketball action on Cotterell Court this evening. Jeomi Maduka led five Big Red scorers in double figures with a game-high 17 points.
 
Colgate freshman Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) added 10 points and five assists for the Raiders, while Georgia Gier (Mercer Island, Wash.) had six points. Rookie forward Kendra Brim (Buffalo, N.Y.). led the team on the boards with six rebounds.
 
Cornell (4-3) and Colgate (1-10) traded baskets in the early going with the Big Red leading 5-4. Cornell started to pull away with a quick 7-0 run to take a 12-4 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the half. The Big Red continued to find the open lanes and knock down their shots as they opened their lead to 18 points, 36-18, with 4:27 remaining in the session. The Raiders got a three-pointer from Kozlowski to make it 36-21, but the baskets continued to fall for Cornell as it went into the break with a 46-24 lead.
 
Colgate shot 45.5 percent (10-of-22) in the opening 20 minutes, including an impressive 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from long range. The Big Red, however, countered that with 62.1 percent shooting (18-of-29) and 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from behind the arc.
 
The Raiders came out of the break a little cold, needing 4:08 to before recording their first field goal. The Big Red capitalized on those four minutes and pushed their lead to 29 points, 57-28, and never looked back on the way to the road victory.
 
Kayleen Fitzsimmons added 14 points, while Gretchen Gregg finished with 13 points for Cornell. Shanna Scarselletta and Allie Fedorowicz rounded out the players in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Lauren Benson paced the Big Red on the offensive end with a game-high eight assists and also led the team with six rebounds.
 
Colgate made 40 percent (20-of-50) of its shots for the game and 50 percent (5-of-10) from the three-point line. The Big Red closed out the night shooting 58.9 percent (33-of-56) overall and 50 percent (9-of-18) from long range. The squads both collected 29 boards apiece, while Cornell had the edge in the points in the paint at 28-20. The Big Red capitalized on Colgate’s turnovers with 37 points.
 
The Raiders return to action on Dec. 21, hosting Cleveland State at 7 p.m., on Cotterell Court before taking seven days off for the holidays.
