Women's Hockey Opens League Play with 4-1 Win over Brown

Junior defender Laura Jansen marked the game with her first career goal.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/9/07) – The Colgate University women’s hockey team opened ECAC Hockey play with a 4-1 win over Brown University at Starr Rink on Friday, Nov. 9. The Raiders’ power-play unit went 3-for-5, and was paced by juniors Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) and Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) with two points apiece.

Colgate took a two-goal lead with back-to-back power-play goals within 16 seconds in the first period. Brown notched the first Raider goal, a 5-on-3 effort with help from Hunt, burying the puck behind Brown goaltender Nicole Stock at 10:14. The Raiders extended their lead, scoring off the next face-off. Freshman Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.) drove the puck down the left side of the ice and passed to sophomore Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) who rifled two consecutive shots at Stock. The second shot rebounded back out to senior Kara Leene (Waterbury, Vt.) who fired the puck past Stock at 10:30.

Brown was able to cut the Colgate lead back to one with a goal at 6:52 in the second session. Skating on the penalty-kill due to a body checking infraction, the Bears gained possession of the puck and just as they entered their offensive end, the penalty on Samantha Stortini was released. Kath Surbey sent a shot in on net that was saved by freshman Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) but popped back out onto the ice where Frances Male was able to bat it over the goal line.

The Raiders power-play unit was successful again just over five minutes into the third period. Brown picked up a feed from Hunt and tried to stuff the puck in on the left side. She moved the puck across the ice to freshman Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) who snapped the puck into the back of the net at 5:10.

Less than two minutes later junior Laura Jansen (Wilmette, Ill.) sealed the Colgate win with her first career tally. Positioned on the left point, Jansen released a shot that found its way through traffic and went five-hole on Stock, trickling over the goal line at 6:54. Sophomore Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) and freshman Jacquie Colborne (Calgary, Alta.) earned assists on the play.

Plenderleith made 18 saves in her first career win while Stock turned away 27 shots for Brown, as the Raiders outshot the Bears 31-20.

Colgate improves to 1-5-1 on the season, while Brown falls to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Colgate hosts Yale on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs defeated Cornell, 5-2, in action tonight.

Notes:
*Colgate first two goals ties the fourth fastest two goals in the Division I era of Colgate women’s hockey. Last season at Union Ali Edell and Sam Hunt scored within 16 seconds of each other. The record is seven seconds set by Avery McGlenn and Cheryl Setchell in 2002 against Rensselaer.
