Marist Edges Colgate 61-60 On Late Basket

HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/21/07) – Spongy Benjamin’s put back basket with seven seconds left lifted Marist to a 61-60 win over Colgate Wednesday night at Cotterell Court dropping the Raiders from the undefeated ranks.
 
Colgate is 4-1, while Marist (2-3) snaps a three-game losing streak with its fourth straight win over the Raiders.
 
Ryan Stilphen paced Marist with 17 points, while David Devezin added 12.  Colgate was led by Kyle Roemer (Martinez, CA) with 15 followed by Daniel Waddy (Tucson, AZ) with 13 and Ben Jonson (Dallas, TX) with 10.
 
These two non-conference foes were tied at halftime, 31-31, before the Red Foxes scored seven straight points in the first minute of the second half.  Devezin with five points keyed the run.
 
Marist increased its advantage to a game-high 11 points, 49-38, with 14:29 remaining.  With the Red Foxes leading 58-48 with 7:29 left, Colgate exploded with 12 straight points for a 60-58 lead with 2:28 remaining.  The Raiders took the lead on a pair of technical foul free throws by Roemer, after Alex Woodhouse (Alexandria, VA) tied the contest on a slam dunk.
 
With 52 seconds left, Stilphen made one of two free throws to cut the deficit to one point, 60-59.  After Waddy missed a 3-pointer, Marist came down the court and Benjamin put back a missed lay up by Devezin for the winning basket.
 
The Raiders had one final attempt to win the game, but Waddy missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
 
Colgate shot only 40 percent from the field, while Marist made 49 percent.
 
Colgate is back in action on Saturday when they host Dartmouth College at 1 p.m.
