BUFFALO, N.Y. (11/12/07)—Canisius College had four players in double figures to earn a 78-33 victory over visiting Colgate in non-conference women’s basketball action at the Koessler Athletic Center. Laura Buetow led the way with a game-high 12 points and eight rebounds, while Colgate freshman
Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) had nine points to lead the Raiders.
Rookie
Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) added seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Classmate
Evan Librizzi (Essex Junction, Vt.) had six, while sophomore
Elise Bronzo (White Plains, N.Y.) picked up seven boards.
Amanda Cavo registered 11 points and Micayla Drysdale and Mere Mullins added 10 apiece. Brittané Russell picked up a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with her eight points.
The first half was played at a furious pace with both teams playing high pressure defense and an up-tempo offense. Trailing 8-3 at the 17-minute mark, the Golden Griffins picked up the defensive pressure and were able to capitalize on Colgate turnovers. Following a three-point basket from Librizzi to make it an 11-6 contest, Canisius caught fire with a 27-0 run over the next 10 minutes.
Kozlowski stopped the run with a jumper, but the Raiders could not seem to get into an offensive rhythm. Canisius slowed down in the final five minutes, getting just 10 points for a 48-13 halftime lead.
Colgate shot just 15.4 percent in the first half, while Canisius hit 54.3 percent of its shots from the floor. The Golden Griffins also hit 45.5 percent from long range (5-of-11) and forced the Raiders into 18 turnovers.
The Raider defense was able to hold off Canisius in the second frame, but could not cut into the halftime deficit as the Golden Griffins added to their lead. Colgate held Canisius to just 22.2 percent from behind the arc in the second half and improved its own shooting to 25.8 from the floor.
For the contest, Colgate shot 21.1 percent and just 12 percent from long range. Canisius finished at 50 percent from the floor overall and 35 percent from behind the three-point arc. Canisius held a slight 48-41 advantage in rebounding for the game.
Colgate returns to action on Nov. 15 at Albany. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
