HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/10/07) – Junior forward
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) scored a short-handed goal with 39 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Colgate University women’s hockey team to a 3-2 win over Yale University on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Starr Rink.
Colgate was whistled for an elbowing infraction with 1:16 remaining, which forced the Raiders to play man down for the remainder of the game. Senior defender
Kate Wolgemuth (Anchorage, Alaska) picked up a turnover in the defensive end and sent the puck to the blue line where Hunt was stationed. Hunt turned and took the puck up the ice and beat Yale goaltender Jackie Snikeris one-on-one with a high shot with 39 seconds remaining.
Yale nearly pulled away with a win after a short-handed goal just over a minute into the third period, which gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. With just three seconds remaining junior defender
Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) scored an extra-attacker goal to send the contest into overtime. The goal marked Colgate’s first extra-attacker goal. Head coach Scott Wiley called a timeout with 33 seconds remaining and pulled goaltender
Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) when Colgate gained its next possession, with 15 seconds to play. Senior defender
Mallory Johnston (Chatham, Ont.) connected with junior forward
Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) who was at the point. Brown fired a shot that bounced off the chest of Snikeris and Dosdall was there to knock the puck into the back of the net with three seconds remaining.
Colgate took a 1-0 lead at 8:24 of the first period with a power-play goal from Dosdall with assists being credited to sophomore forward
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) and Hunt. Stewart had a shot blocked and Hunt found the redirection and sent the puck to Dosdall who was on the doorstep.
The Raiders dominated the first period with nine shots, while the Bulldogs couldn’t get a single shot off. In the second period, Yale came out and started to keep Plenderleith busy, taking six shots to Colgate’s eight.
Bray Ketchum evened the scoring with the game’s only even-strength goal of the game at 13:22 of the second. Johnson had the puck in the right face-off circle and sent it up the ice to Crysti Howser who was at the blue line. Howser used a back-handed pass to get the puck to Ketchum who was streaking up the right side boards. Ketchum skated the puck down the right side and slid across the paint to go over the blocker of Plenderleith.
Johnson scored a goal of her own, a short-handed unassisted tally at 1:03 of the third. An interference call from the second period carried over and Johnson got the puck right in front of the penalty box and rifled a shot from just inside the blue line that went past the outstretched glove of Plenderleith and into the right upper 90 to give Yale a 2-0 edge.
Colgate outshot Yale 13-4 in the final period and both teams had two shots in the extra session.
Plenderleith closed out the game with 10 saves, while Snikeris made 29 stops.
The Raiders went 1-for-5 on the power play, and killed off all of its penalties, five total.
