ERIE, Pa. (10/27/07) – The Colgate University worked its way to a 4-4 tie with No. 3/4 Mercyhurst on Saturday, Oct. 27 in the third period but the Lakers scored two goals in the final eight minutes to take a 6-4 game at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Mercyhurst was paced by Meghan Agosta who scored all of Mercyhurst’s goals in the final two periods, four total, and padded her stats with an assist in the first period.
The Lakers took a 2-0 goal lead in the first period with goals from Hayley McMeekin and Valerie Chouinard.
Colgate’s Johnston cut the lead back to one with a tally just 30 seconds into the second period with help from Hunt. It marks the fourth fastest goal to begin the second period in program history.
Agosta gave the Lakers a 3-1 lead at 1:47, before Hunt connected just 14 seconds later on an unassisted goal.
Colborne even the game with a power-play goal at 7:17 with an assist going to Johnston to end the second with the teams knotted at 3-3.
Agosta crept the Lakers ahead by one at 5:12 but just seven seconds later Leene took the lead away with help from Colborne.
After Merychurst called a timeout at 8:51, Agosta nailed her hat trick at 12:21. Stephanie Jones and Vicki Bendus earned the assists to give the Lakers the go-ahead goal.
Five minutes later the Raiders called a timeout and pulled goaltender
Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) in favor of the extra attacker but Colgate couldn’t keep Mercyhurst at bay as Agosta recorded an empty-net goal with 28 seconds remaining to seal the 6-4 win.
Plenderleith and Laura Hosier each made 23 saves in the game, as Mercyhurst (7-1-1) had a 29-27 shot advantage in the game.
Colgate (0-5-1) takes a weekend off next weekend, before returning to Starr Rink to begin ECAC Hockey league play. The Raiders host Brown on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m., and Yale on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m.
