HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/20/07) – Colgate University outshot the University of Connecticut 25-5 in the final two periods but it wasn’t enough to overcome a two-goal first period deficit in women’s hockey on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Starr Rink.

 

The Huskies came out in the first period and took immediate control over the game. Connecticut capitalized early, scoring just 2:40 into the game.

 

Jaclyn Hawkins had the puck along the right-side boards and sent a centering pass to Dominique Thibault. Thibault skated the puck in and rifled a shot from the slot over the right shoulder of Colgate goaltender Elayna Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.).

 

Amy Hollstein padded the lead after winning a face-off deep in the zone and drew the puck back to Liz Gallinaro. Gallinaro centered the puck back to Hollstein who was right out front and she lifted the puck to the upper left corner at 11:02.

 

Colgate came out on fire in the second, putting 17 shots on net compared to Connecticut’s two, but the Raiders couldn’t sneak one past goaltender Jennie Bellonio.

 

The Raiders was finally able to light the lamp at 9:31 of the third when Kara Leene (Waterbury, Vt.) scored on the power play. Leene had the initial shot on the left side but the puck was stopped by Bellonio and popped free to sophomore Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) on the right. Dombovy gave Colgate another chance but the puck bounced around in the paint and freshman Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.) was able to get it to Leene who was positioned on the left post, and Leene tapped it over the goal line.

 

The Colgate coaching staff pulled Hamashuk with just over a minute remaining, but the Raiders weren’t able to find the back of the net a second time.

 

The Raiders finished the period with eight shots, to the Huskies’ three.

 

Hamashuk finished the day with 11 saves, while Bellonio turned away 28 shots.

 

The Raider’s penalty kill continued its hot streak, and have now killed off 26 straight penalties, and have not allowed a power-play goal this season.

 

Colgate (0-3-1) travel to No. 2 Mercyhurst for a two-game set on Oct. 26-27.
