HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/19/07) – The Colgate University women’s hockey team played to a 5-5 overtime tie with Providence College on Friday, Oct. 19 at Starr Rink in the Raiders’ home opener.
Both teams notched a goal in the first period and Colgate took a 3-2 lead after the middle frame. Providence evened the scoring with a goal seven seconds into the third and then added two more to take a 5-3 advantage. Colgate scored the final two goals to end the game in a tie.
Providence took the lead midway through the first when Erin Normore had the puck behind the net and passed it up to Cherie Henderson who was streaking towards the net. Henderson one-timed the puck over Colgate goaltender
Lisa Plenderleith’s (Ajax, Ont.) pad at 10:05.
The lead was short-lived however as sophomore
Nicole McDonald (Calgary, Alta.) tallied Colgate’s first goal of the season at 13:21. Classmate
Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) dug the puck out of the corner and cycled around the circle where she released a shot that was tipped in by McDonald who was positioned out front.
Freshman
Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) picked up her first collegiate point when she scored an unassisted short-handed goal 47 seconds into the second session. Milan capitalized on a Providence turnover in the neutral zone and carried the puck into the zone where she used her defender as a screen to send a low shot into the right corner past Danielle Ciarletta.
Alyse Ruff tied the game at two apiece when she rifled a shot that missed the net wide but the puck banged off the boards and back out to her stick where she was able to tuck in her own rebound at 15:28.
Junior
Laura Jansen (Wilmette, Ill.) earned her first career point when she passed the puck to Minnick on her way to the bench for a line change. Minnick raced into the zone and deked the goalie, sending the puck five-hole at 19:13 to give Colgate a 3-2 lead at the end of the second period.
Henderson won the opening face-off of the third and sent the puck to Kathleen Smith who carried it into the zone and took a shot from the top of the right circle that went over the glove of Plenderleith, just seven seconds into the period.
After blocking a Raider shot, Normore shuffled the puck to Rachel Crissy and Crissy sent the puck to Katy Beach just inside the right circle beating Plenderleith stick side at 6:17. Colleen Martin had a shot that was saved by Plenderleith but the puck wasn’t covered up as Brittany Simpson found it and was able to send the puck in low at 6:17, giving Providence a two-goal lead.
Junior
Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) scored on the power-play to inch Colgate closer on the scoreboard. The Raiders worked the puck around the zone and
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) sent a cross-ice pass to Milan positioned at the post. Milan took the shot and after a scramble in front of the net Brown was able to poke the puck across the goal line at 9:15.
Junior
Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) set up the game-tying goal when she found sophomore
Ali Edell (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) at the point. Edell gunned a slap shot from the point that went over the Ciarletta’s shoulder at 15:25.
