CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (10/12/07) – The Colgate University women’s hockey team fell 3-0 to No. 8 Boston College in the 2007-08 season opener at Kelley Rink on Friday, Oct. 12.
From the opening face off, Colgate controlled the tempo of the first period keeping the puck down in the Eagle zone and taking 10 shots to Boston College’s seven. Despite the first-period efforts by the Raiders, it was the Eagles that struck first with a goal in the final seconds of the first period.
After releasing a penalty, BC skated the puck down into the offensive end and Meghan Fardelmann tried to sneak the puck past junior
Elayna Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.) on the left side but found no opening so she shifted the puck across the paint to Deb Spillane who was able to slip it in between Hamashuk and the near post at 19:48.
Sophomore
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) gave the Raiders their first chance three minutes in when she ripped a shot from the near face-off circle towards Molly Shaus who turned it away with her pad. Junior
Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) had another chance 20 seconds later when she took a shot right after the Raiders won a draw low in the zone.
BC came out in the second period and was able to get a quick goal seven seconds in. Maggie Taverna connected with Spillane who brought the puck into the zone and skated in on Hamashuk. Finding trouble with her defender she slipped the puck to Fardelmann on her right and she put it over the screened Hamashuk for the goal.
Colgate had some solid chances with time winding down in the second. Sophomore
Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) picked up a loose puck and brought it into the zone, going one-on-one with Shaus, but Shaus took the shot right in the breadbasket. Stewart had another chance after a scramble out front but Shaus stacked her pads to keep the puck from going five-hole with two minutes remaining in the period.
The Eagles struck again to expand their lead to 3-0 with 7.6 seconds left on the clock with a tally from Becky Zavisza. Colleen Harris had the puck behind the goal, faked a turn and moved the puck up the ice to Zavisza who was right on the doorstep to knock the puck top shelf. Allie Thunstrom earned an assist on the play.
Hamashuk made 21 saves, while Shaus turned away 27.
Colgate went 0-for-1 on the power-play, while BC went 0-for-3.
