HAMILTON, N.Y. (01/06/2007)—Army’s Cara Enright scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Black Knights to a 69-58 win over Colgate University in the teams’ Patriot League women’s basketball opener at Cotterell Court this afternoon. Colgate junior
Melanie Cargle (Trotwood, Ohio) led all Raiders with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting.
Colgate falls to 1-15 overall and 0-1 in Patriot League play, while Army improves its record to 14-2 and 1-0 against Patriot League foes.
The Raiders looked strong in the early going, getting good looks at the basket. Colgate took the first lead with a three-pointer from Cargle and maintained its momentum to climb in front by seven, 19-12, at the 11:38 mark.
Army answered by scoring the next six points to cut the lead to one before Colgate rookie
Katie Garman (Poplar Grove, Ill.) knocked down a runner in the lane to put the Raiders back in front by three.
The Black Knights continued to chip away at the lead over the next four minutes, going on a 17-9 run for a five-point advantage with two minutes remaining in the first half.
Colgate’s
Shevorne Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a jumper to make it three points again, before Enright closed the half with a free throw to send Army into the break ahead, 36-32.
The Raiders shot 43 percent in the first half, including 50 percent from long range. Army also fared well from the floor in the opening frame, hitting 46.4 percent of its shots and 50 percent from behind the arc.
Army opened the second half with a 5-0 run to stretch its advantage to nine, 41-32, at 17:45. The Raiders cut the lead to three, 41-38, off a jumper from Cargle, but that would be as close as they could get as the Black Knights pushed their lead to as many as 20 points.
Both teams struggled a little more with their shooting in the second session. Colgate was 34 percent from the field and Army hit 37 percent of its shots.
Martin finished the game with 12 points and six rebounds for Colgate, while junior
Molly Patterson (Euclid, Ohio) and sophomore
Gretchen Polinski (Mansfield, Ohio) both chipped in eight points apiece. Polinski and senior
Carly Brescacin (Tecumseh, Ontario) both had nine rebounds to lead the team. Colgate shot 39.3 percent for the game and held a slight 40-39 advantage on the glass.
Stefanie Stone added 15 points and five rebounds for Army and Megan Evans finished with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Black Knights shot 41.3 percent for the game.
Colgate continues Patriot League play on Jan. 9, hosting Lafayette College at 7 p.m. The Leopards are coming off a, 61-58, upset of Holy Cross.
