HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/23/07) – Keith Simmons hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left to lift Holy Cross to a come-from-behind 58-55 win over Colgate Tuesday night at Cotterell Court.
The Crusaders (15-6) remain undefeated in Patriot League play through six games, while Colgate (6-13) falls to 1-5 in the league with its fifth straight loss. Holy Cross has won eight straight games overall.
Simmons, the leading scorer in the league, finished with 16 points while Tim Clifford had a team-high 18 points and Torey Thomas added 11 points for the Crusaders.
Colgate’s
Jon Simon (Phoenix, AZ) was the leading scorer in the contest with 22 points, including five 3-pointers. He moves into 24
th place in career scoring with 1,035 points.
Colgate jumped out to a 15-4 lead over the Crusaders with Simon scoring 11 of the points. Over the next 6:18, Holy Cross scored 12 straight points to take a 16-15 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half. Simon made three straight foul shots to put Colgate back in front by two points with 5:42 left to stop the Crusader run.
The Raiders were able to increase their lead to five points 25-22 when
Tim Pounds (Dudley, NC) hit the first 3-pointer of his career with 3:07 remaining. Holy Cross scored the next seven points before settling for a 29-28 halftime lead.
Clifford scored the first four points of the second half to give the Crusaders a five-point lead. Colgate came back with a 17-2 run for a 45-35 lead with 11:23 left. Gentile and
Kyle Chones scored five points apiece to start the run, before Waddy added a pair of baskets and Simon finished off the run with a 3-pointer.
After each team made two free throws, Holy Cross scored 12 straight points to open a 49-47 lead with 5:28 remaining. The Crusaders took the lead on a tip-in by Alex Vander Baan.
Later,
Alex Woodhouse (Alexandria, VA) tied the contest for the Raiders at 53-53 on a free throw with 2:17 remaining. Thomas made a lay up off glass with 1:19 remaining to put the Crusaders back in front, before Simon nailed a jumper in the lane with 50 seconds left to tie the contest. After a timeout, Holy Cross worked the ball to the sideline, where Simmons scored the game-winner from behind the arc. Colgate had one final chance to tie the game, but
Kyle Chones’ 3-point attempt missed at the buzzer.
Holy Cross edged Colgate in the rebounding department, 28-25, led by Simmons with seven. Colgate’s leading rebounder was Waddy with a career-tying seven.
The Raiders shot 43 percent from the field, and made 8-of-16 3-pointers, while holding Holy Cross to 39.6 percent from the field.
Colgate travels to Navy on Saturday to close out the first half of its Patriot League schedule.
