Raiders Skate to 2-2 Tie With Bulldogs

Elayna Hamashuk made 31 saves in Colgate's 2-2 tie with Yale.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (1/20/07) – The Colgate University women’s ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Yale University on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Ingalls Rink.  It was the seventh overtime game in series history, which favors the Raiders, 5-4-3.

The first frame was all about the power-play units as Colgate took a 2-1 lead with two man-advantage goals, going 2-for-4 on the power play.

Yale lit the lamp just 1:56 into the contest with a power-play goal from Crysti Howser.  Alyssa Clarke connected with Sheila Zinger and Clarke rifled a shot towards the net that was deflected out to the left side of the cage where Howser was able to put a stick on it and find to the back of the net.

Colgate answered back with a power-play goal of its own at 4:48.  Senior Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Alta.) picked up an Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) feed behind the extended red line and shot it up towards the goal.  The puck banked off of the back of Shivon Zilis’ leg and into the net.

The Raiders made it 2-1 with their second man-advantage tally at 13:29.  Freshman Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) took a shot from just inside the blue line that was knocked away by Zilis to the left of the net where Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) was there to sneak it in behind the netminder.

After a scoreless second period that saw each team put just five shots on net, Yale was able to tie it up with a delayed penalty, extra-attacker goal in the third period.

Howser rifled a shot towards the net that was saved by Elayna Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.) and bounced back out into play.  Nina Resor kept the puck in play and set up Sheila Zingler for the dish at 4:18.

The Raiders had a few great scoring opportunities in the overtime session, but Zilis was the difference, coming up with some big saves, including two glove grabs.  Also playing a spectacular game was Hamashuk, who finished the night with 31 saves.  Zilis stopped 25.

Colgate returns to Starr Rink on Jan. 26-27 for Center Ice Club Weekend.  The Raiders host Rensselaer on Friday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.  The game will be televised live on Time Warner Sports.  On Saturday, Colgate takes on Union at 4 p.m.
