PROVIDENCE, R.I. (1/19/07) – Colgate University freshman
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) scored two goals to help lead the Raiders to a 4-3 win over Brown University on Friday, Jan. 19 at Meehan Auditorium.
Colgate improves to 11-10-1 overall and 10-3 in the ECACHL, setting a program record for wins in the league.
This is the first time Colgate has taken a game from Brown on its home ice, and marks the first time Colgate has swept the Brown in a season, as the Raiders won a 4-1 game in October.
Both teams had ample chances to score in the first, with the Bears having a slight 11-7 shot advantage.
Colgate quickly killed off a
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) hooking penalty but under a minute later another Raider infraction was called.
A close call occurred when goalie
Elayna Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.) stopped a shot but lost sight of the puck. Luckily a Colgate skater was there to sweep the puck down the length of the ice to keep the Raiders out of danger.
Seconds later the Bears had luck on their side as Erin Connors found the back of the net. Connors tapped in a Hayley Moore shot that went between the left post and stick of Hamashuk at 14:35. Krystal Strassman was also given credit on the play.
Colgate was able to even the score before the close of the first with freshman
Evan Minnick’s (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) second career tally. Sophomore
Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) had the initial shot from inside the left face-off circle that was stopped by goalie O’Hara Shipe. After a bit of a scramble in front of the net, Minnick was able to put the puck away at 18:57.
The second period was all about the special teams, as Colgate took a two-goal lead with a short-handed marker and a power-play goal before Brown crept closer with a power-play tally of its own.
Hunt picked up a Stewart
pass and skated the puck into the offensive end with a Brown defender out in front. Hunt deked her defender from right to left and rocketed a shot that bounced off the pad of Shipe and right to the stick of Stewart who was streaking up the ice. Stewart lofted a shot that went top shelf over the glove of Shipe at 7:02, for her first career short-handed goal and Colgate’s second of the season. Junior
Kate Wolgemuth (Anchorage, Alaska) was credited with an assist.
Freshman
Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) padded Colgate’s lead to 3-1 at 9:23 of the second. Junior
Mallory Johnston (Chatham, Ont.) picked up a feed from senior
Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Alta.),
who won a face off low in the zone. Johnston backhanded a shot towards a sprawled out Shipe and Dombovy was able to put it away.
Brown cut the lead to 3-2 at 12:59 with its second power-play goal of the contest. Connors sent a backhanded pass from between the two face-off circles to Moore who shoveled it in as she skated past the goal mouth. Strassman received credit on the play as well.
The Bears had a 16-8 edge in shots in the second stanza, but the Raiders had the advantage in the third, 15-5.
The Raiders added another during the final frame to take a 4-2 lead. Dombovy connected with senior
Ashley Bradford (Burnaby, B.C.) was behind the net and sent the puck up to Stewart who went over the shoulder over Shipe at 2:19.
Shipe was then pulled in favor of Nicole Stock who would play the remainder.
With 40 seconds left in regulation, Hunter sent a shot towards the net and a scramble ensured. The puck got lost as Hamashuk was on her back in the net, and the official signaled a goal.
Hamashuk earned her sixth win of the season making 29 saves, and Stock finished the contest for Brown with 12. Shipe turned away 14.
Colgate will take on Yale tomorrow, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m., at Ingalls Rink. Yale handed Cornell a 5-1 loss this evening.
