Colgate Rolls Over Dartmouth 28-7 In The Home Opener

Jordan Scott rushes for 169 yards and three touchdowns for the Raiders

Jordan Scott had his ninth 100-yard rushing game of his career.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/16/06) – A New Hampshire newspaper in a pregame story said that Dartmouth’s schedule includes some of the hottest offensive stars in the Division I-AA universe – New Hampshire quarterback Ricky Santos, Harvard tailback Clifton Dawson and Cornell running back Luke Siwula, to name but a few.

Maybe after Saturday’s home opener for Colgate, the Big Green will add Raider sophomore tailback Jordan Scott (Hyattsville, MD) to the list.  Scott carried 26 times for 169 yards and three touchdowns to lead Colgate (1-1) to a 28-7 win over Dartmouth (0-1) Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium.

In two appearances against the Big Green, Scott has carried 29 times for 209 yards and four touchdowns.

Last year, when Scott stepped on the field in the fourth quarter for the first time at tailback, he scored on a 33-yard touchdown run on his second carry.

This year it wasn’t much different.  After stopping Dartmouth on its first possession of the game, the Raiders took over at their own 35-yard line following a 42-yard punt by the Big Green’s Brian Sullivan.

On the very first play, Scott broke over the line of scrimmage on the right side, and after cutting back to the left side, raced 65 yards for a touchdown.  Colgate led 6-0 after a missed extra point attempt was wide left with 10:15 remaining.

Dartmouth’s only TD came in the second quarter, after the Big Green blocked a 41-yard field goal attempt, and recovered the ball on the visitors’ 47-yard line.  Eight plays later, Milan Williams went up the middle from one-yard out for the touchdown.  Andrew Kempler’s extra point put the Big Green ahead 7-6 with 7:05 remaining in the first half.

In the third quarter, Colgate struck quickly on its second possession to move in front 14-7.  Scott rushed for his second TD of the game on a two-yard run to cap a 55-yard drive in five plays.  He then caught a two-point conversion pass from Mike Saraceno (Sunrise, FL).

Colgate put the final touches on its 22nd home victory in its last 24 games scoring twice in the fourth quarter.  The momentum swung to the Raiders early in the quarter, when strong safety Geoff Bean (Oneonta, NY) sacked Dartmouth quarterback Tom Bennewitz on the Colgate 49-yard line on a fourth-and-eight play.

Seven plays later, Saraceno connected with sophomore tight end Brent Dillingham (Naples, FL) on a 15-yard touchdown pass.  It was Dillingham’s first collegiate TD reception.

Dartmouth fumbled on its next possession with Bean recovering at the Big Green 36-yard line.  Three plays later, Scott on his third consecutive carry, bolted seven yards for his third TD of the game icing the victory for the Raiders.

Saraceno connected on 14-of-16 passing for 175 yards and one touchdown, and rushed eight times for 38 yards.  His favorite target was senior wide receiver Kenny Parker (Stratford, NJ), who caught five passes for 70 yards.  It was a beautiful 23-yard reception by Parker at the Dartmouth three-yard line that set up the game-winning TD.

Colgate rushed for 223 yards, and finished with 398 yards of total offense, while the Raider defense held the Big Green to 54 yards on the ground and 116 through the air.  It was the 52nd time under head coach Dick Biddle that the Raiders have held the opposition under 100 yards rushing and they are 49-3 when doing so.

For the second straight game, Mike Gallihugh (Midlothian, VA) was Colgate’s leading tackler finishing with 7.5 tackles including one TFL and one pass breakup.  Nate Johnson (Avenel, NJ) and Chris Ekpo (Jonesboro, GA) had five tackles apiece.  Sophomore defensive tackle Ryane Staples (Turner, ME) had a sack.
