No. 20 Colgate Claims Share of League Crown with 2-1 Win at Rensselaer

The Raiders captured their second regular-season championship in the last three years.

TROY, N.Y. (2/25/06) - No. 20 Colgate captured a share of the ECACHL regular-season title with its 2-1 win at Rensselaer on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Houston Field House. The Raiders finished in a tie with Dartmouth for the championship, which is the third in school history and the second in the last three years.

Sophomore goaltender Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) made a heroic effort for the second night in a row, stopping 35 of 36 shots to earn the win. Rensselaer’s Mathias Lange made 16 stops in the loss.

Colgate took the 2-1 lead 6:19 into the third period on the third power-play goal of the game. Junior Mike Campaner (Thunder Bay, Ont.) cycled the puck to freshman Mark Anderson (Hastings, Neb.) at the right point, who sent it to senior Kyle Wilson (London, Ont.). Wilson wheeled around the faceoff dot on the right side, then found sophomore Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) down low, and he scored backdoor.

Both teams were able to cash in on the power play during the second period. The Engineers used a 5-on-3 opportunity to take a 1-0 lead at the 13:26 mark. Keith McWilliams found Brad Farynuk in the high slot, and Farynuk beat Dekanich with a hard slapshot.

Colgate responded 3:03 later with an extra-man score of its own. Junior Marc Fulton (Vancouver, B.C.) brought the puck around behind the net, and pushed it to freshman Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) at the bottom of the right circle. Bogdanich sent a perfect pass to senior Jon Smyth (Markham, Ont.) in the low slot, and Smyth one-timed it past Lange.

By virtue of the league's tiebreaker rules, the Raiders will be the second seed in the upcoming ECACHL playoffs. They will host the winner of one of the first-round, best-of-three series at Starr Rink, Mar. 10-12, in the league quarterfinals.
