HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/25/06) - The seniors of Becky Irvine (Lakeview, N.S.), Allison Paiano (Orleans, Ont.) and Melanie Barclay (Trowbridge, Ont.) went out in style on Senior Day as Colgate women’s ice hockey posted a 9-0 shutout over Union on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Starr Rink.
The Raiders set a new record for the fastest goals scored as they scored four within 1:22 with three of them coming within 20 seconds of each other.
Sophomore Kara Leene (Waterbury, Vt.) led the Raiders offensively with five points off of four goals and one assist, setting a new personal best.
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) had four points and set a new freshman scoring record with 31 points.
Ashley Bradford (Burnaby, B.C.), Tara French (Truro, N.S.) and Paiano all had two points apiece.
French screaming out of the penalty box to give Colgate the 5x4 advantage, and got right into the play down in the Colgate offensive zone. After some hard forechecking in the corner, French won the puck and sent it to Paiano who was behind the net. Paiano skated in from the behind the net and slid the puck behind the goal line at 17:28 of the first.
Bradford wheeled around the circle toward the net but was tripped up by a Union defender. Leene was there to pick up the puck and cut across the slot and went glove side at 3:59 of the second to begin Colgate’s fastest four-goal span. Leene added her second one minute and six second later at 5:01 on the power-play with help from Hunt, giving Colgate a 3-0 lead.
Mallory Johnston (Chatham, Ont.) forechecked a Union player behind the net, disrupting a Union break out. She tipped the puck to Irvine in front of the net, and Irvine deked the goalie with a low glove-side goal at 5:12.
Straight off the center face off, Hunt won the puck and got it to Bradford who proceeded to streak down the ice and sent a centering pass to Ruth Fish (Syracuse, N.Y.), who was just outside the paint, to give Colgate another goal at 5:21.
Skating down a man, Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Alta.) won the puck along the boards and sent a pass to Leene in the slot. Leene one-timed the puck with a high shot, giving her a hat trick at 15:05 to give Colgate a 6-0 lead.
After getting the puck in the neutral zone, Hunt skated into the zone and dragged the puck through her leg as she toasted her defender and put the puck stick side at 18:05 to close out the second period scoring.
Leene took a shot from the right side and after a scramble ensued in front of the net, Hunt came out with the puck and sent it to French who was in the slot. French rocketed a shot to light the lamp at 8:52.
Leene tallied her fourth goal of the night when she won her own face off on the right side of the cage and went straight to the goal and found the netting at 10:13.
Barclay posted her first career shutout making nine saves for Colgate.
Union tested all three of its goaltenders. Dana Smullyan got the loss as she allowed three in the first 25:01 and made 13 saves. She was replaced with Alex Zirbel who played just 20 seconds before Amanda Hanson relived her. Hanson played the final 34:39, making 16 saves and allowing four.
Colgate which finished tied for sixth in the ECACHL standings with Dartmouth, will play the No. 2 seed Princeton at Baker Rink in the ECACHL Quarterfinals next weekend. The best of three series begins on Friday, March 3. Game time is still to be determined.
