HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/24/06) - The Colgate women’s ice hockey team cruised to a 6-1 win over Union on Friday, Feb. 24 at Starr Rink. The line of Ashley Bradford (Burnaby, B.C.), Allison Paiano (Orleans, Ont.) and Becky Irvine (Lakeview, N.S.) proved to be potent for the Raiders as they scored four goals and added five assists for nine points.

Leading the way for the Raiders was Paiano who registered a hat trick. During the game, Paiano moved into second place on the all-time career scoring list and second all-time in goals scored, while Irvine moved into a tie for third on the all-time scoring list.

Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Ont.) opened the scoring for Colgate when she won a face off low in the offensive end and drew the puck back. Kara Leene (Waterbury, Vt.), who was coming across the center of the circle, picked up the puck and headed towards the goal where she went top shelf over goaltender Amanda Hanson’s glove hand at 9:16 of the first period.

The squad set a school record for most short-handed goals in a season, with seven, as Paiano notched a shortie minutes later at 12:06. After a neutral zone turnover by Union’s power-play unit, Irvine recovered the puck and dropped it to Tara French (Truro, N.S.) who then sent a cross-ice pass to Paiano. Paiano carried the puck in from the left side where she was wide open and flipped the puck past the glove of Hanson.

Bradford put Colgate up 3-0 when she tipped in a Clancy Todd (Thorold, Ont.) shot from the point at 16:09 of the second stanza.

Just over two minutes later, Irvine won a draw at the circle, sending the puck straight back to Paiano who went five-hole on Hanson for the hat trick.

The Raiders added some insurance with two goals within the first ten minutes of the final frame.

Irvine sent the puck to the point to Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) who released a slap shot that went just wide of the net. The puck bounced behind the net and back out to Paiano on the left post who then placed it into the wide open net at 2:52.

Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) scored Colgate’s second power-play goal at 7:51 when she came from behind the net, went around her defender, and went stick side on Alex Zirbel who replaced Hanson in net for the final period.

The Dutchwomen were able to slash Brook Wheeler’s (Brussels, Ont.) chance for a shutout, when freshman Josie McDermott scored her first collegiate goal. Skating on the power play, Elise Nichols had the puck in the corner and sent it behind the net to McDermott. McDermott wrapped around the net and sent the puck between the legs of Wheeler at 16:02.

Wheeler finished the net with 13 saves. Hanson made 23 saves playing in the first 40 minutes and Zirbel made seven in the final 20 minutes for Union.

Colgate, now 11-13-7 and 8-8-3, remains in eighth place in the league standings as Yale and Dartmouth both posted victories this evening as well. Union falls to 3-23-1 and 0-19-0 in the ECACHL.

The Raiders and the Dutchwomen will face off again tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m., at Starr Rink.
