Dartmouth Shuts Out Colgate, 3-0, on Men’s Hockey Senior Night

Sophomore Mark Dekanich made 27 saves.
HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/18/06) - Dartmouth sophomore goaltender Mike Devine made 21 saves to earn his first career shutout, 3-0, at Colgate on Saturday, Feb. 18. The shutout was the first at Starr Rink of the No. 20 Raiders (16-10-6, 12-6-2 ECACHL) in a year.

The Big Green (14-11-2, 12-6-2 ECACHL) found the back of the net in each period. They opened the scoring with 8:28 left in the opening session. Dartmouth worked the puck low, keeping it behind the net and putting it in front to get off an occasional shot. After a wrap-around attempt by Eric Przepiorka, Nick Johnson picked up the rebound and shot from a low angle through traffic. The puck deflected and trickled between the legs of Raider sophomore goaltender Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.).

Dartmouth’s second goal came 8:11 into the middle frame. Garret Overlock passed the puck through the neutral zone to Rob Pritchard, who was crossing the blue line on the left side. Pritchard shot in, and the rebound popped out to J.T. Wyman in the high slot. Wyman’s shot beat Dekanich low on his glove side.

The Big Green put the game away 5:49 into the third. Following a scramble in the corner, Connor Shields rang the puck around the boards and behind the net to Kevin Swallow. Swallow passed the puck in front of the net, but it hit the back of a Colgate player’s leg and bounced past Dekanich, five-hole.

Dekanich finished with 27 saves as his Raiders were outshot, 30-21. Colgate was unable to capitalize on any of its six power-play opportunities, although it killed off both of Dartmouth’s attempts. The only victory the Raiders achieved on the night was in the faceoff circle, where they beat the Big Green 39-31.

Colgate travels to the Capital District for the final weekend of the regular season. The Raiders have not yet secured a first-round bye, and will face a tough Union team on Friday and a hungry Rensselaer team on Saturday. Both games start at 7:00 p.m.
