HANOVER, N.H. (2/17/06) - The Colgate University women’s hockey team fell short, 2-1 to Dartmouth on Friday, Feb. 17 at Thompson Arena. The win gave Dartmouth two points to catch up to Colgate in the ECAC Hockey League standings, with the squads tied at seventh with 17 points.
Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) was outstanding coming up with some big saves for the Raiders in the opening frame, making 11 total stops, as the shots were lopsided in favor of the Big Green, 12-4.
Caroline Ethier was finally able to get one past Wheeler at 15:56 of the first period. With the man-advantage, Danielle Grundy feed Ethier from the dot of the left face-off circle to the same side of the cage. Ethier faked a pass and snuck the puck between the post and Wheeler on the left side. Sarah Newman was credited with the second assist.
Some interesting things to note in the first period, Dartmouth’s goaltending. Third-string goalie Lauren Balukjian got her first career start, played one shift, and exited. Balukjian, a senior, played four years for the Big Green’s field hockey team joined the team in December and went out with official playing time on senior weekend. She was replaced with Carli Clemis, who lost her stick on Colgate’s first trip down to the Dartmouth end. Clemis got a stick from a teammate but was only challenged one time before the puck was sent to the other opposite end and was able to regain the proper equipment.
The Raiders were renewed in the second stanza, generating more offense, as shots were slanted in favor of Colgate, 13-9.
Colgate knotted the score at one apiece with a power-play goal from Kara Leene (Waterbury, Vt.). Colgate picked up the puck behind their own net and started to bring it up the ice. A diagonal pass was intercepted by a Dartmouth player but senior Allison Paiano (Orleans, Ont.) wouldn’t let her get away with the puck as she chopped at her stick until she got the puck back just as the two crossed the red line. Paiano sent the puck up in front of the net where Becky Irvine (Lakeview, N.S.) was skating in. The puck bounced off Irvine's stick and found its way to Leene at the hash marks and the sophomore sent a low shot past Clemis to the far right corner at 13:07.
The Big Green had 13-8 shot advantage in the third which they were able to turn into a 2-1 lead when Marley McMillan tallied the eventual game-winner at 13:11. Maggie Kennedy sent the puck to Amy Cobb who was racing up the left boards. Cobb skated behind the net but not before dropping off the puck to McMillan who went five hole on Wheeler.
Colgate falls to 10-12-7 overall and 7-7-3 in the ECACHL, while Dartmouth improves to 10-10-4 and 7-7-3 in the conference.
The Raiders will travel to No. 9/10 Harvard tomorrow Saturday, February 18 for a 4 p.m. contest. The Crimson lost 4-3 to the Big Red of Cornell at Bright Hockey Center this evening.
