CANTON, N.Y. (2/10/06) - Colgate sophomore goaltender Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) made 41 saves, but it was not enough as St. Lawrence earned a 3-2 win over the Raiders on Friday, Feb. 10, at Appleton Arena. The Saints outshot the Raiders 44-12 on the game, including 13-1 in the third period.
St. Lawrence earned the victory with a goal on a five-minute power play during the third period. Freshman Matt Generous let loose a rocket from the right point, which found its way to T.J. Trevelyan through traffic. The rebound from Trevelyan’s shot came to Mike Zbriger, who found a hole, and the puck dribbled past Dekanich and over the goal line.
The Saints earned a 1-0 lead with 5:37 left in the first period. St. Lawrence sent the puck into the zone with a long dump-in, but icing was waved off as Raider freshman Mark Anderson (Hastings, Neb.) followed the puck over the goal line to the left of the cage. The teams battled in the corners, until Adam Hogg got it loose to Charlie Giffin behind the net. Giffin faked to each side before sending it around the right side to Kevin DeVergilio, who one-timed it past Dekanich from the doorstep.
The Raiders tied it up less than three minutes later on the power play. Late in the man-advantage opportunity, freshman Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) carried the puck into the zone and gave it to sophomore Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) just over the blue line along the right boards. Winchester found classmate Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) low on the right side, and Burton passed the puck across the slot to senior Kyle Wilson (London, Ont.), who put it top-shelf on Saints netminder Justin Pesony for his 21st goal of the season, and his 10th power-play tally.
Colgate took a 2-1 lead with 8:09 into the middle frame. After the Raiders dumped the puck into the zone, freshman Tom Riley (Nepean, Ont.) was left to battle for it along the low boards to the right of the net. He worked it out of the corner to junior Liam Huculak (Lethbridge, Alta.), who skated out from behind the net, back to his defender. With one hand on his stick, Huculak wheeled around and pushed it between Pesony’s legs.
St. Lawrence tied the game at two-all with 4:29 left in the second period. Trevelyan sent a weak shot on net from just inside the blue line, but due to traffic in front of him, Dekanich didn’t see the puck until it was behind him.
The Raiders head to nearby Potsdam to face Clarkson on Saturday, Feb. 11, starting at 7:00 p.m. Tonight, the Golden Knights beat first-place Cornell, 3-1.
