TROY, N.Y. (12/2/06) – Freshman
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) scored on a 5x3 power play in the first frame to give the Colgate University women’s hockey team a 1-0 win over Rensselaer on Saturday, Dec. 2 at Houston Field House.
Fifteen seconds after Colgate returned two players to the ice following 44-seconds of 3x3 action, Stewart
put the Raiders on the scoreboard with a power-play goal. The Raiders chased the puck down in the neutral zone after an Engineer clearing attempt, and Stewart picked it up at center ice and sent it to the left side boards to
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.). Hunt dropped it off to
Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) who was directly behind her on the boards and Brown sent a centering pass to Stewart who was streaking up the ice to rifle a shot over the shoulder of Ashley Mayr at 12:45, for her first collegiate game-winning goal.
Brown
received a five-minute boarding major at 18:24 to force the Raiders to play the remaining few minutes of the second and the start of the third man down. With about 30 seconds remaining in the second half,
Ali Edell had a short-handed breakaway and the crowd stood to its feet as Mayr fell as she skated out of net towards Edell. Edell was held up by Jamie-Lynn Stewart, who was whistled for body checking, as Edell’s shot went wide of the open net.
Neither team could captialize on those penalties, as Colgate's penalty-killing unit was 8-for-8 and its power-play was 1-for-8.
Colgate controlled the puck for the majority of the game but the shots fell fairly even, with a 16-14 Raider advantage.
Senior
Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) made 14 saves for the Raiders who improve to 7-9-1 overall and 7-3 in the ECAC. Mayr turned away 16 shots for the Engineers who are now 6-11 overall with a 2-4 league mark.
Colgate will take a three-week break before returning to the ice in 2007. The Raiders will hit the road for their longest trip of the year to take on Wayne State in a pair of games on Jan. 5-6 in Detriot, Mich.
