Women's Basketball Comeback Falls Just Short at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. (12/18/2006)—The Colgate University women’s basketball team battled back from a 14-point first-half deficit, but fell just short in a 64-59 loss at Cornell University this evening. Colgate junior Shevorne Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a career-high 17 points to lead all scorers in the game. Martin also pulled down five rebounds.
 
The Raiders fall to 1-9 overall, while the Big Red gets its first win of the season to improve to 1-7 overall.
 
Junior Caitlin Gillard (Vestal, N.Y.) added 13 points for the Raiders. Cornell was led by Kayleen Fitzsimmons’ 13 points. Lacey Workman chipped in 11 points for the Big Red in the win.
 
Sophomore Gretchen Polinski (Mansfield, Ohio) added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Raiders shot 42.3 percent from the floor for the game, including 53.8 percent in the second half.
 
Colgate closed the first half with a 10-4 run and continued to chip away at Cornell’s 14-point first-half advantage at the beginning of the second frame. The Raiders tied the game for the first time at 47-47 with 7:21 left on the clock.
 
Freshman TaHara Williams (Mason, Ohio) gave Colgate its first lead of the game, 52-49, since 19:19 of the first stanza with a three-pointer at the six-minute mark. The Big Red responded by scoring the next five points to go back in front for good, 54-52. Cornell outscored Colgate 15-7 in final six minutes of the game to secure the five-point win.
 
Williams finished with 13 points, including a career-best three trifectas.
 
The first half was all Cornell as it held Colgate without a field goal for 6:30. Leading 8-5, the Big Red ran off a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to stretch the lead to, 18-7, at the 12:57 mark.
 
Cornell continued to build on its lead, holding the Raiders without a field goal for 6:30 and pushing its advantage to as many as 14 points, 24-10. Colgate would not go away as it used a mini run at the end of the half to cut the lead to seven, 31-24.
 
It was Martin and Gillard carrying the Raiders at the end of the half, scoring all 10 of the Colgate points in the 10-4 run in the final four minutes. In fact, Martin and Gillard combined to score the team’s final 14 points of the half.
