SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (12/1/06) – Sophomore
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) had a four-point effort which included her second career hat trick, and freshman
Ali Edell (Madison, N.J.) collected her first collegiate hat trick as Colgate University posted an 8-0 shutout over Union College on Friday, Dec. 1 at Messa Rink.
Colgate had three goals in both the first and second periods and added two more in the third period. The Raiders outshot the Dutchwomen 58-25, coming just one shot short of tying a program record. Fourteen different Raiders found their way onto the scoresheeet, with six having multiple-point games.
Skating on the power-play
Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Alta.) blasted a shot from the point that was stopped by Union goaltender Alex Zirbel but rebounded back out on to the ice to the left side of the net where Edell was all alone and had a clean shot on the open target.
Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) was also given credit on the goal at 11:25
Just 16 seconds later Hunt made it 2-0 Colgate with help from
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) and
Ashley Bradford (Burnaby, B.C.). At 16:50, Stewart gave the Raiders a three-goal cushion when she skated in alone on net and went over the blocker of Zirbel after connecting with Hunt and
Kate Wolgemuth (Anchorage, Alaska).
Colgate outshot Union 26-12 in the opening frame, a Raider season-high.
The Raiders added three more tallies in the second stanza to increase the lead to 6-0, with a 16-8 advantage in shots in the period.
Edell chipped in her second marker of the game at 1:56.
Kara Leene (Waterbury, Vt.) sent the puck up the right side boards to
Mallory Johnston (Chatham Ont.) at the blue line. Johnston sent a cross-ice pass to Edell that found its way over the goal line.
Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) picked up her first collegiate point when she set up
Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) for the Raiders’ fifth goal at 7:19. Minnick connected with McNaughton just in front of the extended red and sent the puck to Brown who was just to the left of the right hand face-off circle. Brown rifled a shot that went over the shoulder of Zirbel.
Fifteen seconds after Colgate killed off a
Jill Cater-Cyker (Ithaca, N.Y.) body checking infraction, Cater-Cyker came out of the box on the opposite side of the team benches to assist on Hunt’s second goal of the contest at 13:09.
The final frame saw both Hunt and Edell collect hat tricks as Colgate outshot Union 16-5. Hunt was up first when she found the back of the net at 14:19.
Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) sent Bradford the puck from the left face-off circle and Bradford found Hunt who went over the stick of Zirbel for the score.
Edell notched the final tally of the contest, a power-play goal at 16:08. The Raiders had multiple shots on net amidst a scramble out front and Edell was finally able to knock the puck in.
Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) and Dombovy were credited with the assists.
Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.), earning her seventh career shutout, made 25 saves, while Zirbel stopped 50.
