Bronzo Scores Career-High 15 Points in Loss to Syracuse

HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/28/2006)—Syracuse University had three players in double digits as the Orange dropped Colgate University, 66-49, in women's basketball action at Cotterell Court. Vaida Sipaviciute scored 16 points and Nicole Michael turned in a solid all-around performance with 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Freshman Elise Bronzo (White Plains, N.Y.) led the Raiders with a career-high 15 points.
 
The Orange remains unbeaten in the 11 meetings with Colgate. This was the first game between the two teams on Cotterell Court since the 1976-77 season. The Raiders fall to 1-5 overall, while Syracuse improves to 2-4 on the year.
 
Colgate jumped out in front 6-2 in the early minutes, but a pair of back-to-back three-pointers from Fantasia Goodwin put Syracuse up 8-6. The Orange never looked back as they ran off a 28-7 run over the next 11 minutes to go ahead 36-13 with 6:27 on the clock. Syracuse pushed the lead to as many as 26, 41-15, before Colgate cut the gap to, 46-25, at the break.
 
The Orange shot lights out from three-point range in the opening stanza, knocking down 7-of-14 from long range. Syracuse shot 51.4 percent overall from the floor in the first 20 minutes, while Colgate connected on just 35.7 percent of its shots from the field.
 
The deficit proved to be too much for the Raiders to overcome in the second half, as they trailed by as many as 29 points. Colgate turned up the defense, forcing the Orange into 14 second-half turnovers and just 33 percent shooting. It was not enough for the Raiders as Syracuse pushed its record to 11-0 against Colgate.
 
Patriot League Rookie of the Week TaHara Williams (Mason, Ohio) chipped in 10 points for Colgate, while junior Caitlin Gillard (Vestal, N.Y.) had eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Raiders shot 35.8 percent for the game and outrebounded the Orange 36-31.
 
Goodwin added 14 points and eight rebounds for Syracuse on 5-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-5 from long range. Mary Joe Riley also dished out five assists for the Orange and dropped in eight points. Syracuse shot 44.6 percent for the game.
 
Colgate will take an eight-day break from games before returning to action on Dec. 6 against Vermont. The Raiders will host the Catamounts on Cotterell Court at 6 p.m.
